Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Anthony Martial, Jose Fonte

Christopher SimpsonDec 1, 2016

Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to capitalise on Anthony Martial's struggle to establish himself as a regular starter for Manchester United under Jose Mourinho and want to bring him back to France.

That's according to the Sun's Daniel Cutts, who also relayed comments from a "United source," who said: "It is well known PSG are very keen if the club does consider selling.Ā He has been dropped recently against Feyenoord and West Ham United and has generally struggled for form."

The 20-year-old arrived from AS Monaco in the summer of 2015 and enjoyed a sensational debut season at Old Trafford, notching 17 goals and nine assists in all competitions.Ā

Martial has played 14 times for the Red Devils this season, but just 386 of his 802 minutes on the pitch have come in the Premier League.

However, he put in an outstanding showing against West Ham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, as he netted an impressive brace in a 4-1 quarter-final victory.

Football writer Liam Canning hailed his performance and his chemistry with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was enjoying just his second start of the campaign:

The pacy Frenchman—who has frequently been used on the left wing at United but can also play as a centre-forward—is one of the most exciting prospects in the Premier League, and his composure in front of goal belies his tender years.

PSG could benefit from his presence at the Parc des Princes after Zlatan Ibrahimovic swapped the French capital for Manchester in the summer—they still have Edinson Cavani, who on Wednesday scored his 100th goal for the club since joining in 2013. However, the Uruguayan is as renowned for missing chances as he is for taking them.

Martial offered a timely reminder ofĀ his worth to the team on Wednesday, and if he continues to be played alongside Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan and the resurgent Wayne Rooney, he'll net plenty more goals for the remainder of the campaign—PSG will surely need to look elsewhere.

Manchester City's Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero (R) vies with Southampton's Portuguese defender Jose Fonte during the English Premier League football match between Manchester City and Southampton at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, north west England

Meanwhile, according to the Sun's Fred Nathan, Southampton expect United to renew their interest in Jose Fonte at some point, either in January or next summer, and they are "resigned to losing" him.

The centre-back's deal runs out in 2018, so the club risks him leaving for nothing if he doesn't sign a new contract.

Canning believes United need a new centre-back this winter to cover for Eric Bailly—especially if he's selected for Africa Cup of Nations duty with Ivory Coast:

Indeed, the Red Devils are a different prospect without their star defender, and Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo inspire little confidence.

Fonte will turn 33 in December and would only be a short-term solution, but he's a capable and experienced Premier League defender and would make for a useful addition to the side.

What could play a part isĀ Rojo's performances—the Argentinian has struggled to convince at Old Trafford but has put in some much-improved displays in recent weeks.

If he can keep up his form, then he, Smalling, Jones and Daley Blind may well suffice as cover for Bailly while he's on international duty, and United may opt to wait until the summer for a longer-term acquisition than Fonte.
