Darrelle Revis Reportedly Doesn't Want to Play Football Anymore

Joseph ZuckerNov 30, 2016

In the midst of one of his worst seasons in his NFL career, New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is reportedly contemplating his future.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta spoke to a source who said Revis is already beginning to look toward retirement: "He's done. If he had his way, he'd be done right now. He doesn't want to play anymore. He's made a lot of money."

Once considered one the game's best corners, Revis' decline has been abrupt in 2016. It began when Cincinnati Bengals wideout A.J. Green caught 12 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown in a 23-22 season-opening win against the Jets. Revis' performance hasn't improved much since, with USA Today's Nate Davis floating the idea of a move to safety.

While not entertaining the possibility of retirement, Revis told Newsday's Kimberley A. Martin in October that he was beginning to feel the physical toll of playing a decade in the NFL:

"

He is breaking down.

"Yeah, I am. I mean, not in a bad way. I can still play," Revis said, smiling. "It's just, I'm breaking down. I'm 31. How many corners are 31 right now in the league? The league's getting younger. I know [Vikings cornerback Terence] Newman's still playing [at 38], which is impressive. But I don't know how he's doing it."

"

Revis' tone changed a bit after the Jets' Week 12 loss to the New England Patriots. When asked about what future he envisions in the Big Apple, he said, "We'll see how it goes," according to NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes.

While abrupt, Revis' retirement wouldn't be entirely surprising. With increased concern over their long-term health, more players are walking away from the game at a younger age.

At this point, the Jets may prefer to see Revis leave the league altogether. According to Over the Cap, he'll earn a base salary of $13 million—with $6 million guaranteed—in 2017 and then a little over $10 million annually in 2018 and 2019.

That's a lot of money to pay a cornerback who is not only declining but also facing question marks over his durability.

Revis' retirement would provide a clean break and allow the Jets to go in a different direction for next year and beyond.
