Latest on Rose's Contract Status

Tuesday, Nov. 29

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks have yet to approach Rose about a new deal, as they want to see how his health holds up over the course of an entire season.

If Rose stays off the injured list and enjoys a great year, the Knicks reportedly don't mind paying him more than they otherwise would have had they extended him earlier.

The Knicks can sign Rose at any time, and he is eligible for a veteran extension similar to the one Russell Westbrook signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Such a deal would stretch over three years and net Rose roughly $75 million.

Per Berman, Rose isn't yet concerned with his contract status: "I haven't talked to them about it. It's been more about winning games. We'll see. I'm more concerned with trying to win games, but it's something I'd have to talk about with my family and team."

Last season was Rose's first largely healthy year since 2010-11, and he has built upon that during the current campaign by averaging 16.8 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game.

The three-time All-Star and former NBA MVP is also coming off his best performance of the season, scoring 30 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday.

New York's cautious approach is understandable considering Rose's myriad health problems in recent years, but waiting is a calculated risk since he could potentially play well enough to earn a max deal.

Although the Knicks may be willing to pay that, it could hamstring them in terms of adding other impact players to the core of Rose, Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis moving forward.
