DeMarcus Cousins Comments on Potentially Playing with John Wall

Scott PolacekNov 28, 2016

DeMarcus Cousins' Sacramento Kings face John Wall's Washington Wizards on Monday, but prior to the game, the big man weighed in on the prospect of playing with the point guard rather than against him.

According to Candace Buckner of the Washington Post, Cousins and Wall "talk constantly," and the Kings playmaker said "It's came up" when asked whether they ever discussed being teammates at the NBA level.

Buckner noted Cousins also said, "You never know what will happen. It's the NBA, so hopefully one day [Wall] will be in a Sacramento uniform."

Cousins and Wall have already played together once before, when they suited up for the Kentucky Wildcats in 2009-10 and led them to an SEC title and Elite Eight appearance. They likely won't be recreating their college days anytime soon, though, as Cousins won't be an unrestricted free agent until 2018, while Wall will be one in 2019.

Though they can't join forces as free agents next summer, Cousins is no stranger to trade rumors. A Western Conference executive told Sam Amico of Amico Hoops that it was "50-50" whether the Kings would trade Cousins this season.

However, Cousins said Monday that he hoped Wall would come to Sacramento. Last month, he declared his affection for the city on SiriusXM.

During the offseason, meanwhile, Wall told CSN's Chris Miller (h/t Andrew Joseph of USA Today) he and teammate Bradley Beal "have a tendency to dislike each other on the court."

The Wizards were 41-41 and missed the playoffs last season and are off to a disappointing 5-10 start in 2016-17. If Washington can't turn things around in short order, it could lead the front office to explore trades with Cousins' Kings or other teams across the league.

Teaming Wall with Cousins again would make the Kings far more dangerous in the Western Conference. Cousins is a two-time All-Star and two-time member of the All-NBA second team, while Wall is a three-time All-Star and has averaged at least 10 assists in each of the last two seasons.

The Kings haven't finished with a winning record since the 2005-06 campaign, when they went 44-38 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

While the big man was merely hypothesizing before Monday's game, pairing the 26-year-old Cousins with the 26-year-old Wall would open up a new window of competitiveness for the franchise.
