Manchester United vs. West Ham: Team News, Live Stream, TV Info for EFL Cup Tie

Christopher SimpsonNov 28, 2016

Manchester United and West Ham United will face each other for the second time in four days when they meet again at Old Trafford on Wednesday, this time in the EFL Cup.

The pair played out a 1-1 draw at the same venue on Sunday in the Premier League. Both United manager Jose Mourinho and Hammers boss Slaven Bilic will be hoping to ease the mounting pressure on their heads by progressing to the semi-finals.

The Red Devils are 11 points off the lead in the Premier League title race and eight points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, while the Irons are winless in four games and find themselves just one point above the drop zone.

Team News

Per the Evening Standard, Wayne Rooney, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial could all be in line to start the match, as could Michael Carrick after he returned to training on Monday having missed the draw a day prior.

The Red Devils will have to make do without Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini, however, as they are both suspended.

Meanwhile, Diafra Sakho is a doubt after exiting the field with a "potential calf problem" on Sunday, so he could be replaced by Simone Zaza as Andy Carroll remains injured. Gokhan Tore might also be in line to play if he is able to return from the thigh strain that kept him out of Sunday's match.

Predicted Manchester United Lineup: Sergio Romero; Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw; Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera; Morgan Schneiderlin, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial; Wayne Rooney.

Predicted West Ham United Lineup: Darren Randolph; Cheikhou Kouyate, James Collins, Angelo Ogbonna; Michail Antonio, Pedro Obiang, Manuel Lanzini, Aaron Cresswell; Andre Ayew, Dimitri Payet; Simone Zaza.

Preview

On Sunday, the Hammers relied on an exceptional performance from goalkeeper Darren Randolph to keep United out.

As Squawka Football revealed, the Red Devils had far more shots and chances than their visitors:

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News pinpointed what he believed to be the cause of United's problems:

Neither are likely to be an issue on Wednesday as Rooney, Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial might all start. The Frenchman was not involved on Sunday, while the other two were restricted to coming off the bench.

While they were unable to make a match-winning impact upon their introduction on Sunday, the likely inclusion of Rooney and Mkhitaryan should give the Old Trafford faithful some hope.

The pair were outstanding against Feyenoord on Thursday—the former rolled back the years with a fine goal, while the Armenian ran the Dutch side's defence ragged as he looked to dribble at defenders and create opportunities for his side.

Football writer Liam Canning hailed both players after the 4-0 win:

Further, Rooney has a long history of netting against West Ham, per United's official Twitter feed:

The Red Devils will be hoping he can produce the goods once again, and if he can replicate his performance from the UEFA Europa League there's a strong chance he will.

United might also benefit from Carrick's composed presence if he's able to start. However, there remains a question mark over whoever replaces Pogba—if Daley Blind plays in defence, the only remaining central midfielders will be Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, and both are severely lacking match practice.

Dimitri Payet will be among the Hammers players trying to take advantage of any uncertainty in the middle of the park, and his creativity is a real threat—according to Squawka Football, his total of 46 chances created in the Premier League is the best in the division.

However, the Hammers have struggled to convert them, and if Sunday's goalscorer, Sakho, is missing it will be even more difficult—Zaza is yet to find the back of the net or convince in his 10 appearances this season.

United should be able to progress through this match, but as they demonstrated on Sunday that's no guarantee of a victory—this game is likely to hinge on their ability to finish off their chances.
