World Cup of Golf 2016: Friday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Tom SunderlandNov 24, 2016

The Danish pairing of Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen blazed a trail on Day 2 of the 2016 World Cup of Golf in Melbourne, Australia, on Friday after carding a score of 12 under par to take a three-stroke lead.

They overtook the previous leaders, Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello and Jon Rahm, who sit third on eight under, just a single shot behind second-placed China, which is represented by Ashun Wu and Haotong Li.

The Day 2 display from Kjeldsen and Olesen was particularly impressive considering they rounded the Kingston Heath Golf Course for level par on Thursday, picking up all 12 of their shots on the second day of the contest.

Recap

After recording four bogeys in Thursday's session, Kjeldsen and Olesen showed much improvement and enjoyed a blemish-free round that no other pairing on the course could match, as illustrated by the European Tour:

A 152-yard hole-out eagle on the third, courtesy of Kjeldsen, jump-started their day's exploits—the first of two for the Danes on Friday—before they birdied six of their nine holes on the back stretch to move into a commanding lead.

The Danish duo spoke to the European Tour after Thursday's result, where Olesen acknowledged that "combined today, we were very good":

Lauren Wood of Fox Sports provided further quotes from Kjeldsen, who admitted the contrast in styles between him and his partner was a benefiting factor:

"

Temperament-wise, I don’t think we are that different.

Game-wise, we’re different. Thorbjorn is very flashy – he hits very far from the tee and overall has got an amazing game.

I’m sort of like a train – I arrive on time but without too much of the flashy stuff. It’s a good combination. Denmark has been close before … it would be an amazing experience.

"

China's 65 was enough to keep them within touching distance of the leaders, but they weren't alone on that score as four other pairings managed to match it, not to mention two other teams managing Day 2 scores of 64.

Li threatened to pull China up the rankings, complete with seven birdies, and he wasn't without his share of glossy moments, either, via the PGA Tour:

England's Chris Wood and Ryan Sullivan are one of four pairings tied for fourth on seven under. The other teams on that scoreline are Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker of the United States, Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero of Italy and France's Victor Dubuisson and Romain Langasque.

Day 2 turned out to be a round that numerous teams aced as four-ball play made its debut, with Walker and Wood in particular thriving from just off the greens:

Olesen and Kjeldsen will undoubtedly revel in their climb for now, but foursomes makes its return to the competition on Saturday, and they'll hope Friday's display was an example of how their contest will pan out from here.

The Danes have built some momentum in their favour, but another slump, like the one seen in Thursday's even-par performance, could yet see a new leader arise at the 2016 World Cup of Golf, with everything to play for.
