Matthew Stafford, Darius Slay, Matt Prater Win Thanksgiving All-Iron Award 2016
For the first time in history, a kicker has taken home Phil Simms' All-Iron Award.
As CBS Sports PR announced, the CBS broadcaster named Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater as one of three recipients after he knocked down all three of his attempts in Thursday's 16-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings, including a 40-yarder as time expired. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and cornerback Darius Slay were the other two recipients.
Stafford threw for 232 yards and a touchdown, also engineering a late drive to set up a Prater field goal to tie the game with just under two minutes remaining. Slay picked off a Sam Bradford pass on the Vikings' subsequent drive to set up Prater's game-winner.
Both teams spent most of the game tough sledding on offense, relying on a series of underneath passes to make their way down the field. Stafford needed 40 attempts but took what the defense gave him throughout and did not make a mistake.
Slay, who also had four tackles and a pass defensed, had only one interception on the season coming into Week 12. He's now matched his career high with two picks.
Prater had field goals of 48, 40 and 28 yards. He's 8-of-8 on field goals during the Lions' three-game winning streak.
His game-winner Thursday gave the Lions a one-game lead in the NFC North and clinched the head-to-head tiebreaker with Minnesota. The Vikings have lost five of their last six games since their 5-0 start, including two to Detroit in the last four weeks.
