Aaron Ramsey, Edinson Cavani Incident Commented On by Steven Gerrard
Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard said Aaron Ramsey should be "embarrassed" by his overreaction to an Edinson Cavani swipe as the pair clashed during Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain's 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw on Wednesday.
Ramsey and Cavani squared up as the Uruguayan tried to delay a Gunners penalty late in the first half at the Emirates Stadium. When the striker swung his arm at the Welshman and appeared to hit his chest, the Arsenal man clutched his face.
Despite Ramsey's reaction, Cavani's hit did not appear to land anywhere near his chin. Former England captain Gerrard was not impressed with the midfielder, saying on BT Sport (via Liam Prenderville in the Mirror): "I think he should be a little embarrassed by that. I thought the Welsh are meant to be tough."
One of Gerrard's fellow BT Sport pundits, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, was similarly critical of Ramsey, as BT Sport Football shared:
The referee largely ignored the altercation and did not issue Cavani with any booking for lashing out. Olivier Giroud went on to net the spot-kick, which saw Arsenal go in level at 1-1 at half-time following the Uruguay international's opener.
In contrast to Gerrard and Ferdinand, BBC 5 live Sport's Mark Lawrenson felt that Cavani should have been sent off:
Had he been given his marching orders, the final result could have been very different in north London.
As it was, Arsenal went ahead through a calamitous Marco Verratti own goal on the hour, only for Alex Iwobi to glance Lucas Moura's header into his own net for the equaliser 17 minutes later.
| Team | Played | Won | Draw | Lost | For | Against | GD | Points |
| Paris Saint-Germain | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 11 | 5 | 6 | 11 |
| Arsenal | 5 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 14 | 5 | 9 | 11 |
| Ludogorets | 5 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 13 | -9 | 2 |
| Basel | 5 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 8 | -6 | 2 |
Cavani then missed two gilt-edged chances to earn PSG an arguably deserved win and guaranteed top spot in Group A.
The Ligue 1 giants remain in the driving seat to claim the No. 1 qualifying place, though, as they simply need to match Arsenal's result away at FC Basel when they host Ludogorets Razgrad at the Parc des Princes on December 6.
Arsenal's inability to top their Champions League group has plagued them in recent times, as they have fallen at the last-16 stage in each of the last six seasons, having drawn Barcelona twice, Bayern Munich twice, AC Milan and AS Monaco.
It could yet come back to bite them again in 2016-17, although there is as much danger in finishing top this term, as Real Madrid and Bayern could be opponents in the first knockout round.
