Jason Jones Suspended for Drug Policy Violation: Latest Details and Reaction
Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Jason Jones has been suspended two games for violating the NFL's substance abuse program, per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.
Salguero reported this punishment stems from an OWI (operating while intoxicated) arrest during the offseason.
"Jason notified the team of this situation when it occurred and has been in regular contact with the NFL, team officials and his coaches throughout the process," the team said in an official statement, per Salguero. "We were disappointed when we were made aware. Jason recognized and apologized for his lapse in judgement and has fulfilled his legal obligations."
Jones is in his first season with the Dolphins and has played in all 10 games, starting five, while collecting 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
The 30-year-old has bounced around the league in his nine seasons in the NFL, spending time with the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions. He started all 34 games he played over the last three years with Detroit, accumulating 9.5 sacks in that span.
He signed with the Dolphins this season to provide some depth along an already solid defensive line. He adds value with his ability to play either defensive end or tackle.
Even if Mario Williams remains out, Miami has enough talent to overcome the loss of Jones for the next two games. Cameron Wake and Andre Branch started Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams and will likely remain in the lineup for the immediate future.
Terrence Fede will also likely see more snaps while Jones is unavailable, although Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald also noted the team can fill the roster spot with another player.
