The sting from the wound can still be felt at the Vicente Calderon after Real secured yet another UEFA Champions League success at the expense of Atletico last term.
The regal side of the Spanish capital have always looked down on their humble rivals, and history has not been kind to Atleti.
However, Diego Simeone's team produce heart and energy in equal abundance, and Real can never take for granted the threat that their nearest and dearest pose.
Zinedine Zidane has watched his side springboard off their 11th European Cup success last season, carrying the joy of the occasion through the summer months.

Real's form has been exceptional, unbeaten in their last six in all competitions, according to Sky Sports. Atleti have sustained two losses during the same period—away defeats to Real Sociedad and Sevilla—but they remain confident whenever they play in front of their ravenous support at home.
Sky Sports Spanish football pundit Terry Gibson selected his combined XI selection for the fixture and dropped Ronaldo (h/t dbsportsonline):
Ronaldo has struggled to find his top form after an injury-hit summer, but his goal return continues to impress since his comeback.
The icon has scored seven goals and provided five assists in his 12 appearances in La Liga and Europe, according to WhoScored.com, proving he can deliver the goods, even when his health has been compromised.
Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC reported that beIN Sports pundit Aitor Lagunas believes the aggressor in the derby could obtain an edge on Saturday:
"I believe we will see the ball shared between the two—maybe with Atletico just shading possession. Both will also be very keen to take advantage of any spaces and mistakes in the opposition defence. This would not be such a change of scrip—Atletico have been winning recent derbies by having more of the ball than Madrid.
"

Jaime Rodriguez of El Mundo said he thinks the hosts might take the bull by the horns as they show Real less respect than in recent years (h/t Corrigan).
"I see an Atletico side more dominant than on other occasions," Rodriguez said. "Madrid's injuries in midfield give Simeone's team a good opportunity to go for the game. But he always shows Madrid a lot of respect, even more than against Barcelona."
Zidane confirmed to reporters that Karim Benzema will be in the squad after dealing with a muscle problem, saying the striker could start the match. Sergio Ramos could also return for the visitors after a spell on the sidelines, with Zidane telling reporters that Ramos "has trained well all week, and we will see tomorrow how we will play."
Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic are also in the mix after injury, per Lambourne.
However, Toni Kroos is out with a fractured metatarsal, and he could miss the upcoming El Clasico. Casemiro will also miss out against Atletico, with Zidane telling reporters that "we will see next week if he can train with us."

Griezmann's fitness remains key for the hosts, and his potential absence will severely affect their ability to win on Saturday.
Real are firing on all cylinders at present and are finding the back of the net with ease. The Portuguese will likely be the spearhead of the league leaders as Real attempt to counter-attack behind their opponents' rearguard.
Los Blancos are clearly the team in form, and the fitness of their squad has come together at the right time to give them plenty of positive options ahead of the prestigious derby.
