Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay Rumours
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is reportedly "determined" to fight for his place at Old Trafford despite losing his place in manager Jose Mourinho's starting XI. Elsewhere, Memphis Depay is said to be eyeing a Premier League stay if he does leave the club.
Rooney has fallen to the fringes of Mourinho's side since the Portuguese arrived at the club in the summer, but the Observer (h/t the Mirror's Liam Corless) reported he wants to see out the remainder of his contract.
The England skipper has two-and-a-half years remaining on his Old Trafford deal, and it appears he's adamant to see them out.
Rooney enjoyed a star performance in United's 3-1 beating of Swansea City on Sunday, supplying two assists to brace-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic to move into the Premier League history books:
As noted by Corless, Rooney has been associated with a move away from United in 2017, with a host of Chinese Super League outfits linked with his signature, as well as boyhood club Everton.
Difficult as the player's situation might be, Rooney took to Twitter in the wake of Sunday's win at the Liberty Stadium to display his affection for the supporters who have chanted his name for 12 years:
At 31 years of age, there is a question as to how much long-term value Rooney holds at United, although Sunday's performance suggested he still has plenty to offer among Mourinho's ranks.
ESPN FC's Musa Okwonga agreed that display harked back to the Rooney of old, although Mourinho may not deem his presence necessary unless that kind of quality is witnessed on a more regular basis:
Meanwhile, a French journalist (h/t Le 10 Sport, via Sport Witness' Dipesh Agarwal) has said Memphis would prefer to remain in the English top flight if he does leave Manchester United next year.
The winger was being linked with a move to Olympique de Marseille, but L'Equipe's Mathieu Gregoire wrote the Ligue 1 outfit wouldn't interest the Old Trafford outcast (via Agarwal):
"Memphis Depay will prefer to play in any Premier League club rather than Marseille. Because it is the most competitive league, he has one foot in it already and certainly will not get out.
And especially financially, we can’t account for the wages of these guys. Let’s stop fantasising about England.
"
A January transfer looks plausible for the Netherlands international given he's failed to start a Premier League fixture under Mourinho this season, with six of his total seven appearances this term coming off the bench.
Considering the former PSV Eindhoven star is still just 22 years of age, Memphis may yet have a future at Old Trafford, although Mourinho's use of his talents—or lack thereof—suggests he's surplus to requirements.
