Jose Mourinho Charged with Misconduct After Manchester United vs. Burnley

Matt JonesNov 1, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

The FA released the following statement on its Twitter feed, referencing the Portuguese’s behaviour during the 0-0 draw with Burnley at Old Trafford:

Mourinho was angered at the interval after referee Mark Clattenburg failed to award the home side a penalty following a tangle between Matteo Darmian and Jon Flanagan.

According to a source quoted by John Cross of the Daily Mirror, the former Chelsea boss went “absolutely ballistic” at the decision before being sent to the stands for the second period.

The potential punishments for Mourinho could now be a warning, a fine, a touchline ban or a stadium ban, per BBC Sport.

Bleacher Report’s Paul Ansorge captured the moment Mourinho made his way up to the stands following the alleged half-time altercation:

For the United boss, it’s the second charge in the space of five days following the FA's response on Thursday to comments made about referee Anthony Taylor. Oliver Kay of the Times summed up a disappointing spell for the manager:

Unfortunately for Mourinho, matters on the pitch are just as frustrating as they are off it. United ran into a wonderful goalkeeping display from Clarets stopper Tom Heaton on Saturday, although they were profligate when chances did come about.

Indeed, as we can see here courtesy of OptaJoe, seizing opportunities has been a major issue for Mourinho’s side, with no goals scored in their last three Premier League games:

After no wins in their last four games, United have slipped down to eighth position in the table and are eight points back on leaders Manchester City. The Red Devils face Fenerbahce in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, before visiting Swansea City on Sunday.

Mourinho is no stranger to controversy and has been in trouble with the FA before. Last season during his time as Chelsea boss he was given a one-game stadium ban after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United “in relation to his language and/or behaviour towards the match officials in or around the dressing room area at half-time,” per Sky Sports.
