Sir Bobby Charlton, Ashington Adidas Tribute Shoes Selling for Hundreds on eBay
Adidas' new "Ashington" trainers—named after the Northumberland town in which Sir Bobby Charlton grew up—are being sold for up to £349 on eBay after many sizes sold out.
That's according to the Chronicle's Keiran Southern, who reported the trainers honouring the Manchester United legend were released on October 27 and were not available online—they could only be purchased at Adidas megastores in Manchester and London, for £89.
United shared a look at the shoes prior to their release:
The shoes proved popular and almost immediately sold out in a number of sizes before emerging online at inflated prices.
According to Southern, "the black shoes are a throwback to the boots worn in Charlton’s era, as well as a nod to the coal Ashington is so famous for," and bears a Red Devil on the right heel.
Charlton, who was a key part of England's FIFA World Cup-winning team in 1966, made 758 appearances for United in a 20-year stint at the club and scored 249 goals, making him their record goalscorer.
The 79-year-old's last Red Devils appearance came in 1973 before having brief spells at Preston North End and Waterford United.
He is now a club director and ambassador at Old Trafford, where the South Stand was renamed in his honour earlier this year.
