Jose Mourinho Auctions Watch He Was Wearing at Manchester United, Unicef Gala
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho helped raise more than £30,000 for charity on Monday when he spontaneously auctioned off the watch he was wearing along with other items at the Red Devils' 17th annual United for Unicef charity gala dinner.
According to Alice McKeegan of the Manchester Evening News, the Special One attended the event with his players and auctioned off a collection of memorabilia "consisting of his signed, worn Adidas hoodie, training top and the scarf" he was holding at his unveiling as manager in the summer.
Mourinho added his watch to the auction as an extra, "last-minute" show of generosity, which the MEN captured:
Per McKeegan, the 53-year-old said:
"Charity is one of the amazing things in society and I have always been very supportive of Unicef. You know that the money is going to the right place and is going to make a big difference.
Tonight the money is going to help children in Thailand so we know that we are going to contribute to a better future—I think it is difficult to have a better feeling than that.
"
As Samuel Luckhurst of the same outlet noted, the act provided a stark contrast with the perception some hold of the former Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Chelsea manager:
United shared a look at the dinner, which raised a significant sum of money for the charity:
The money raised will help fund education schemes for children in Thailand, and the partnership between the Red Devils and Unicef is "the longest running of its kind."
United for Unicef has raised over £4 million for the children's charity since its inception in 1999.
