Latest on Rubio's Future in Minnesota
Wednesday, Oct. 19
According to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Timberwolves are in no hurry to trade Rubio:
"The Sacramento Kings are the most determined of several teams expressing interest in finding a pathway to a Rubio deal, league sources said, but Minnesota president and coach Tom Thibodeau is reluctant to move Rubio – outside of bringing back a no-brainer package, of course – until Dunn’s progress illustrates this season that he’s ready to fully take over the team.
"
Minnesota would be smart to at least give Dunn some time to become accustomed to the NBA before making him the starting point guard. Wojnarowski reported that head coach Tom Thibodeau doesn't envision elevating the rookie until at least 20 games into the season.
This shouldn't be considered a rebuilding year for the Timberwolves. While the core of their team is still relatively young, the talent is there for Minnesota to make a playoff push in 2016-17, especially with Thibodeau on the sideline.
Rubio has his flaws, but he's an experienced guard who can help the team in the present much more so than Dunn. The Timberwolves were 9.3 points better per 100 possessions when Rubio was on the floor last year, per NBA.com.
The 25-year-old is also coming off his best year in the NBA. He averaged 11.9 points and 10.2 assists per 36 minutes, according to Basketball-Reference.com.
While the Sacramento Kings are smart to target Rubio, they—along with any other interested parties—will likely have to wait until well into the regular season before any trade becomes realistic.
