Ben McLemore Contract: Latest News, Rumors on SG's Future with Kings

Alec NathanOct 19, 2016

Sacramento Kings shooting guard Ben McLemore is eligible for a fourth-year extension, but the team is reportedly unlikely to reach a deal with the former No. 7 overall pick by the Oct. 31 deadline, according to ESPN.com's Chris Haynes.

Latest on McLemore's Extension Talks

Wednesday, Oct. 19

If McLemore and the Kings don't agree to terms on an extension by the start of November, he will become a restricted free agent on July 1.

According to Haynes, "It is believed throughout NBA circles that McLemore's best playing days would come in a different uniform."

Considering the Kings have been engulfed in a cycle of constant turnover since McLemore was drafted in 2013, that shouldn't come as a surprise.

The former Kansas Jayhawks standout is getting ready to play for his fourth coach (Mike Malone, Tyrone Corbin, George Karl, Dave Joerger) in as many seasons, and repeated role changes haven't allowed him to settle into a groove.

And while McLemore averaged a career-low 7.8 points per game last season, he did shoot a personal-best 36.2 percent from beyond the arc.

McLemore may be forced to take a back seat to Arron Afflalo, but if he can carve out a role as a consistent bench contributor who thrives as a finisher in transition and spot-up three-point shooter, he could earn himself a nice payday in free agency.
