Manchester United vs. Fenerbahce: Jose Mourinho's Key Pre-Match Presser Quotes
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho revealed that no player in his squad is untouchable ahead of Thursday's UEFA Europa League group-stage clash with Fenerbahce at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese also hinted that playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan could play a part against the Turkish outfit having recovered from injury.
Questioned about the idea he had undroppable players during his first spell at Chelsea—between 2004 and 2007—Mourinho said that was not the case now he is in charge of the Manchester giants, per Samuel Luckhurst and Alexandra Porter in the Manchester Evening News:
"That was 11 years ago, a different Premier League and situation. The best team by far. Untouchable in our team has to be the spirit, the commitment, the pride, the commitment to the club, respect to the fans, that has to be untouchable, not players."
| Team | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | GF | GA | GD | Pts |
| Fenerbahce | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| Feyenoord | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
| Manchester United | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
| FC Zorya Luhansk | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | -1 | 1 |
Mkhitaryan was one of the players Mourinho bought in the summer after his appointment as Louis van Gaal's successor, but the Armenian international has barely played for his new side this term.
He is now ready, though, to return to action, per Luckhurst and Porter.
"Mkhitaryan was injured, he is not injured any more and is training without any limitations," said Mourinho. "I cannot confirm if he will play tomorrow but he is fit and it is time for him to go back to the levels we know he can achieve."
United's clash with Fener falls between two vital matches for the Manchester outfit in the Premier League—Monday's 0-0 draw at Liverpool is followed on Sunday by a trip to Chelsea.
However, having claimed only three points from their first two group games, the Red Devils arguably have to beat the Turkish giants—for whom former United striker Robin van Persie currently plays—at home.
Mourinho was coy on his team selection but said he will put out a side that is "good and strong," while confirming that Luke Shaw will return to the starting XI, per BBC Sport's Simon Stone:
United last faced Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League group stages in 2004, when a then-18-year-old Wayne Rooney netted a hat-trick on debut during the clash at Old Trafford.
The United skipper, now 30, could well be in line to start against Fener on Thursday as he has been limited only to substitute appearances for United's last four matches.
Given United's hectic schedule, Mourinho will surely have to rotate out some of the players who faced Liverpool and who he will want to play against Chelsea.
Rooney is an ideal candidate to go into the starting lineup, as his expertise and experience should help United pick up all three points.
Anything other than a victory on Thursday and United could be struggling to make the knockout rounds of this year's Europa League, a humiliation Mourinho will surely not be willing to accept.
