Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Mauro Icardi and Yaya Sanogo

Tom SunderlandOct 17, 2016

Arsenal's chances of signing Mauro Icardi have reportedly been boosted following the Inter striker's recent falling-out with some sections of the club's support. Meanwhile, Saint-Etienne are said to be interested in Yaya Sanogo.

The Gunners were linked with Inter captain Icardi over the summer, and the Sun (h/t Daily Star's Colin Harvey) reported the release of his autobiography has worsened tensions between him and the San Siro fans.

In the book, Sempre Avanti, Icardi recalled a run-in with an Inter Ultra following defeat to Sassuolo last year, per the Sun's Alvise Cagnazzo, before claiming he had "100 criminals from Argentina" watching out for him.

Such comments have caused a lot of friction between the Argentinian and Inter's supporters, however, and Eurosport's Siavoush Fallahi provided a look at the banner fans unveiled outside Icardi's Milan home:

Arsenal have long been in search of a world-class striking presence up front, and summer signing Lucas Perez has disappointed after playing just 64 minutes in the Premier League this season.

Despite recent troubles, however, Inter manager Frank de Boer has chosen to keep Icardi as his captain, the Guardian's Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday, and the player himself seems eager to stay in Milan:

There's no avoiding the obvious in this scenario, though, and Icardi could struggle to maintain his status at the club—never mind the captain's armband—unless relations between him and the supporters improve. Fans even celebrated when Icardi missed a penalty during Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Cagliari.

The Argentinian could rescue the situation considering he's scored six goals in eight Serie A appearances already this season, although the Guardian's Paolo Bandini emphasised the magnitude of his book calamity:

Icardi, 23, may present something of a conundrum to Inter and would be a similarly controversial figure in north London, although manager Arsene Wenger may be happy to take those kinds of risks at the moment.

Olivier Giroud looks to have slipped outside of Arsenal's starting plans after Alexis Sanchez has taken to playing up front, handing his boss a return of five goals in 10 outings and five assists.

Sanogo doesn't look likely to be patrolling Arsenal's attacking line anytime soon, and Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Dipesh Agarwal of Sport Witness) reported Saint-Etienne could sign the striker in January.

Sanogo, 23, joined the Gunners from French outfit Auxerre in 2013, but the forward has played for the Gunners just 11 times in league competition and may be permitted to pursue first-team football elsewhere.
