Ranieri appears to be putting being competitive in Europe's elite club competition ahead of a credible Premier League title defence. He's been resting key players, leaving more than one influential figure on the bench for Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea, per Matt Gatward of The Independent.

The figures in question were ultra-creative winger Riyad Mahrez and towering striker Islam Slimani. When asked about his decision to leave the pair on the bench, Ranieri appeared to confirm his focus is Europe, per James Sharpe of the Leicester Mercury:

Leaving out Slimani was a controversial call, since the 6'2" frontman is the club's record signing. Yet Ranieri knows what the former Sporting CP forward can do in Europe, having seen him score the winner against Porto last time out.

The question now becomes how will Ranieri fit Slimani back into the team? Will he partner jet-heeled Jamie Vardy in the 4-4-2 formation that served the Foxes so well last season? Or will the Algerian powerhouse be tasked with leading the line by himself?

Much may depend on the fitness of Shinji Okazaki, Leicester's hard-working supporting striker who was also rested for the trip to Chelsea.

Ranieri made it clear Okazaki is not injured, but he admitted he was cautious with the Japanese star after recent international duty, according to the Leicester Mercury's Rob Tanner:

Ranieri is taking a gamble resting so many players with Europe in mind. However, few will begrudge his caution if the Foxes qualify for the tournament's knockout phase.

Unlike in the Premier League, Leicester have been able to count on defensive solidity in Europe. In fact, City are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League, with goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and centre-back Robert Huth thriving.

Yet staying stingy won't be easy against a spirited, well-drilled Copenhagen side. In particular, skipper Thomas Delaney stands out.

He recently described how the Danish club, like Leicester, make competing in Europe a priority, per Ian Holyman of UEFA's official site.

"There is an enormous difference between the [Danish] Superliga and the Champions League," Delaney said. "This is what we live for and this is the reason we have such a good team. We want to do well in the Champions League."

Delaney has helped Copenhagen take four points from two matches, with prolific striker Andreas Cornelius also a threat. His aerial presence will provide a stern test for Huth and Co.

Leicester should still manage at least another point, with their home support sure to be a factor, along with the emphasis Ranieri and his players have placed on performing in this competition.
