Dak Prescott Comments on QB Competition with Tony Romo

Joseph ZuckerOct 12, 2016

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott isn't going to rock the boat when it comes to the potential battle between him and Tony Romo for the starting job.

"This is Tony's team," Prescott said Wednesday, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. "I knew that going into the situation—just trying to give my team a chance to win week in and week out."

The rookie added that he doesn't envision a midseason switch causing problems with his teammates, per the Dallas Morning News' Brandon George: "I think there would be no problem in this locker room."

On Monday, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported the plan in Dallas is for Romo to take over when he's healthy, but Prescott is inspiring more confidence from the team:

Romo's back injury could've been a significant blow to the Cowboys offense. The unit was a disaster when he missed time in 2015.

Instead, Prescott has seamlessly moved into the starting role. Through five games, he has 1,239 passing yards and four touchdowns without throwing an interception. The 23-year-old has the seventh-highest grade (83.8) among quarterbacks on Pro Football Focus, while he's second behind Atlanta Falcons signal-caller Matt Ryan in DYAR (defense-adjusted value over replacement) on Football Outsiders.

With Prescott and rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott leading the way, the Cowboys are averaging 397 yards per game, the second-best mark in the league.

Prescott is remaining diplomatic about Romo's return, but he's making a stronger case with each week that he should remain the starter.

ESPN.com's Bill Barnwell presented arguments for each scenario but also argued the starter under center might not matter. Elliott will remain a focal point of the offense, and the defense's performance will be a significant factor in any success the team has.

Romo may be more experienced with a proven track record, but Dallas could arguably be better off sticking with the hot hand, assuming Prescott's successful start continues over the next few weeks.
