Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2016: Final Leaderboard, Prize Money Payouts

Tom SunderlandOct 9, 2016

Tyrrell Hatton blazed his way to the 2016 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship crown on Sunday after a fourth-round score of 66 saw him beat joint runners-up Richard Sterne and Ross Fisher by four shots.

The Briton finished on 23 under par after four rounds of the tournament, while Sterne and Fisher were tied on 19 under, struggling to keep up with the meteoric pace set by Hatton over the weekend.

Hatton set the bar high after he shot a terrific 62 on Saturday, but the 24-year-old managed to sustain that momentum and finish strong at St. Andrews to cap off his European Tour triumph.

Hatton's first-ever European Tour win netted him a €711,073 (£640,000) share of the overall prize pot, not to mention bagging him 711,073 Race to Dubai points to go along with his major haul.

Recap

Hatton came into Sunday's final day with a three-shot leader over Fisher, and it boded well for the young upstart who had matched the St. Andrews Old Course record on Saturday as a warm-up for Sunday's showdown.

After performing well at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns on Thursday and Friday, respectively, Hatton continued to impress at St. Andrews, as highlighted by National Club Golfer:

Four birdies and five pars across Sunday's front nine steered the British contender en route to a championship run, and it wasn't until the 17th hole that he recorded just his third bogey of the entire weekend.

Golf Digest editor Mike O'Malley also took note of Hatton's strong display across the four days, and his preference for St. Andrews was clear by the fact he birdied a magnificent 17 of the 36 holes he played there:

A splendid approach on the 14th set Hatton up for an effortless birdie—a sign of just how little the pressure was affecting him on the final day, irrespective of his youth:

Fisher managed to go around Kingsbarns on Thursday without so much as a bogey, but despite replicating that feat at St. Andrews on Sunday, it wasn't enough for him to pull back Hatton's insurmountable lead.

Fisher's tally of five birdies and 13 pars was to be applauded in itself, but an apparent lack of risk in his play meant he and Sterne were forced to settle for a share of the silver-medal place in the end.

The South African Sterne was also seamless across his Saturday and Sunday performances at St. Andrews and bested Fisher only slightly, birdieing six holes and failing to record a bogey, albeit falling just short in the end.

Elsewhere, Danny Willett emerged victorious alongside Jonathan Smart in the team competition:

The German Florian Fritsch was the only player who ended in the top 30 who managed to record a score higher than 70 on Sunday (71), and he fell from title contention into tying for seventh as a result.

Hatton has already been causing waves among golf's elite, and he'll be looking to make more of an impact on the circuit after sealing his maiden European Tour win on Sunday.
