Tottenham Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Emanuel Mammana and Kevin Wimmer

Tom SunderlandOct 9, 2016

Tottenham Hotspur could undergo a significant change of defensive personnel this winter following reports the north Londoners are eyeing Lyon centre-back Emanuel Mammana, while Kevin Wimmer has teased a January exit.

Tom Hopkinson of the Mirror reported Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is looking to link up alongside fellow Argentinian Mammana at White Hart Lane after seeing the defender develop in Ligue 1.

The 20-year-old only moved to Europe earlier this year after leaving River Plate for Lyon this past summer, but Pochettino appears to have already seen enough of the young talent to make good on his assessment.

Goal's Robin Bairner recently confirmed the calibre of the up-and-coming star after he was nominated for the 2016 Golden Boy award, an annual accolade given to the best under-21 player in Europe:

According to Hopkinson, Mammana has a £9 million buyout clause in his contract that could complicate Lyon's attempts to keep hold of the player should someone be willing to trigger it.

At the start of this season, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson talked up the South American's potential as part of the Lyon back line as something to keep an eye on throughout the campaign:

Tottenham already have a talented array of central defenders among their ranks, with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld covered by England international Eric Dier, while Federico Fazio is on loan at AS Roma.

Lyon already lost centre-back Samuel Umtiti to Barcelona over the summer and won't be eager to see another up-and-coming defender leave their ranks in such quick succession.

Elsewhere, Spurs defender Wimmer has confessed he'll need to see an improvement in first-team involvement if he's to remain at the club during the January transfer window.

Speaking to the Sun on Sunday, Wimmer admitted he may need to assess his options unless things see a quick change (h/t TalkSport):

"

The club say they see me as part of their future.

I played quite often at the end of last season and had higher expectations for this term. But I was injured in pre-season and that set me back.

I will remain positive. But I will take another look in January and decide whether or not to look around at other clubs.

"

The Austria international moved to north London from Cologne last year and has started 21 times under Pochettino, but with Vertonghen and Alderweireld present, starting places have been limited.

Wimmer arrived at the Premier League club with big expectations ahead, but the desire for first-team prominence may mean the club have to say goodbye to their promising central defender this winter.
