Calvin Pryor Fined for Hit on Doug Baldwin: Latest Details and Reaction
New York Jets safety Calvin Pryor has been fined by the NFL for his hit on Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin in the second quarter of the Jets' 27-17 loss Sunday.
Per Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press, Pryor confirmed he was fined $25,000 but plans to appeal.
Pryor questioned the fine on Instagram, posting an image of the hit that led to an unnecessary-roughness penalty:
Two plays after Pryor was called for the penalty, the Seahawks scored a touchdown to cap a 92-yard drive and take a 7-3 lead.
Pryor's fine is the tip of the iceberg on a season that has gone awry for the safety, with Sunday's game being particularly egregious.
Per Jordan Plocher of Pro Football Focus, the 24-year-old allowed five catches on six targets for 94 yards while playing 25 snaps Sunday. Before the season started, Matt Claassen of Pro Football Focus noted the former first-round pick was coming off the best year of his career in coverage.
In four games this season, Pryor has recorded 10 total tackles with no interceptions or passes defensed. The 1-3 Jets rank 26th in passing yards allowed per game and 32nd in opponents' completion percentage, per ESPN.com.
Head coach Todd Bowles' aggressive, attacking defense has not lived up to its potential thus far. Pryor may not agree with the fine for his hit on Baldwin in Week 4, but the penalty shined a light on what's been one of the glaring weaknesses in New York this season.
