NaVorro Bowman Injury Update: 49ers LB Out for Season with Torn Achilles
San Francisco 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman is out for the remainder of the 2016 season after suffering an injury in Week 4, the team's official Twitter account announced Monday.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the 28-year-old tore his Achilles.
He was carted off the field during Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and was unable to return.
Bowman also missed the entire 2014 season with a torn ACL and MCL.
Rand Getlin of GQ alluded to that injury history when weighing in on Bowman's injury:
The linebacker recorded eight tackles and a sack before coming out of the game Sunday. He had 35 tackles on the year to go with an interception and a forced fumble.
When healthy, Bowman is one of the best defensive players in the NFL. He has been a first-team All-Pro in each of his last four full seasons, tallying 154 tackles last year.
As Rapoport noted, the former third-round draft pick was rewarded with a four-year, $44 million contract extension before the start of the season.
The injury leaves the 49ers in rough shape going forward. Not only did the team fall to 1-3 after losing its third consecutive game, but depth at linebacker also remains a major issue.
Gerald Hodges and Michael Wilhoite have each spent time at middle linebacker alongside Bowman, and both will have to step up in his absence. Nick Bellore could also earn more playing time after mostly serving as a special teams player to this point in the season.
