Toney Douglas to Cavaliers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappOct 3, 2016

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed point guard Toney Douglas, according to David Aldridge of Turner Sports.

The team waived forward Eric Moreland in a corresponding move.

Douglas, 30, averaged 8.7 points, 2.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 61 games with the New Orleans Pelicans last season (18 starts), averaging 20.7 minutes per contest. He shot 39.9 percent from beyond the arc last season and is a career 36 percent shooter from three.

His role in Cleveland is hardly assured, however, as Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reported:

With Mo Williams retiring, the Cavaliers had an opening at point guard on the bench behind starter Kyrie Irving. While the team did draft Kay Felder this offseason, relying on a rookie as the sole backup to Irving would have been a risky proposition.

Additionally, shooting guard J.R. Smith has yet to sign a new deal with the team, leaving Cleveland's backcourt depth thin. Iman Shumpert is the starter at the position for now—and could also play point guard in a pinch if Smith is handling the shooting guard duties—but adding Douglas gives the team more flexibility at the 1.
