Projecting Matt Hardy's Role in the WWE Universe If Signed from TNA

Aaron BowerSep 30, 2016

With speculation rife about the future of Total Nonstop Action wrestling, it’s only natural some of the company’s bigger names get linked with a move to WWE.

Only this week, TNA minority owner Billy Corgan confirmed on The Dan Le Batard Show (h/t ESPN.com's Brian Campbell) that WWE could be back in the running to buy TNA, and if it does, it effectively gives the company a pick of who it may want to incorporate into the active roster.

One of those would surely be Matt Hardy, a man who continually reinvents himself and makes his character one of the most interesting on the TNA roster. In recent months, the "Broken Matt Hardy" gimmick has continued to excel to new heights—but if he did join WWE, where would he fit in?

First of all, it’s important to try work out whether the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick would work if transferred across to WWE. When the company tried to replicate TNA’s The Final Deletion show by having The New Day and The Wyatt Family brawl in a compound, it looked like a cheap imitation of what was, and continues to be, a brilliant TNA angle.

So could WWE sign Hardy and take on the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick and continue to make it work? In a roster already flooded with talent, it’s hard to imagine WWE would be able to find the time to make it pay off.

That, therefore, means another reinvention for Hardy, but there are two ways that could be done. The first is the obvious route, and that includes WWE also re-signing Matt’s brother, Jeff, and the two tackling WWE as a tag team.

The Hardy Boyz always felt like they had unfinished business as a team in WWE, and with two tag divisions to pick from, WWE could really spice up one of the two divisions. Right now, SmackDown is the division that seems to hold up better, but that could change by the time any signing of one or both Hardy brothers materializes.

So with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, plus The New Day, on Raw, sending some experience to a youthful, exciting tag division on the blue brand would really shake things up. American Alpha and The Usos will be at the head of that division for quite some time, but it would be great to see The Hardy Boyz begin to make their way through the rankings on Tuesday nights.

The thought of them being the team that takes on The Usos following their incredible heel turn is a thrilling thought.

However, if Matt Hardy came to WWE on his own, there's every chance he could become a breakout singles competitor in the company once again.

In that case, a move to Raw, where the three-hour timeslot offers more opportunities to succeed and thrive, would be a better fit.

Having Hardy target a title such as the United States Championship and firm up the company's midcard at a time when WWE is going through a major transition would be a huge coup.

Matt Hardy has shown that he can work as a babyface or a heel in the past and as a solo star or a member of a tag team.

If WWE do get TNA and some of its talent, Matt Hardy would be one of the biggest of the lot. He could once again become a major player on WWE television, but it's probable that it would be without the gimmick that has made him so popular throughout most of 2016.
