John Henry Comments on Liverpool, Anfield Expansion Plans, Jurgen Klopp, More

Tom SunderlandSep 29, 2016

Liverpool owner John Henry has said supporters have convinced the club to curb plans to continue Anfield's redevelopment. Plus, the Reds figurehead has praised the early work of manager Jurgen Klopp following the club's early success this season.

Anfield's Main Stand expansion was recently completed and increased the capacity to 54,000, but Henry's plans to renovate the Anfield Road stand have now been delayed in response to fans' price outcry.

Per the Associated Press (h/t Sky Sports), the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) figurehead said: "I don't know if there is a next step because ticket prices are an issue in England. That may foreclose further expansion. We'll have to see."

Jay McKenna serves as chair for the Liverpool supporters union Spirit of Shankly, and he questioned the validity of Henry's claims that fan reaction was the true reason behind the delays:

Supporters staged a mass walkout in the 77th minute of their February meeting against Sunderland, per the Press Association (h/t Guardian), after it was announced ticket prices would rise to £77.

Stadium construction costs can often be a heavy burden, even on the Premier League's elite, and Henry's concern suggests venue improvements may not make financial sense unless they can make up the cost.

On-pitch results will help alleviate that burden, but McKenna again questioned whether the owners couldn't afford to dig a little deeper before more silverware arrives:

In Klopp, the club has a manager who brought them to two finals in his first season at the helm, losing in Capital One Cup and UEFA Europa League deciders against Manchester City and Sevilla, respectively, last term.

The German came in as a replacement for Brendan Rodgers last October, and Henry went on to give Klopp credit for his work so far: "He was a perfect fit for Liverpool, for the culture of the club, for the supporters, for the kind of team that we were trying to build. We couldn't have asked for a better fit."

The Reds have made a bright start to the 2016-17 season and are unbeaten in their last six outings across all competitions, having won four of their six Premier League games, including wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and champions Leicester City.

However, the Liverpool Echo's Andy Kelly was quick to point out some hypocrisy in Henry's latest comments, which could be interpreted as detrimental to the fans following the announcement of a renovation delay:

Some sections of Anfield are still revelling in the outcome of the ground's latest redevelopment, but to hear that it could be a wait before more is added will be a big blow to many of those at the club.

Henry suggests more must be shown by those on the pitch until the stadium can reap further rewards, but fans may desire a more forthcoming show of faith—and investment—from those running the club.
