Allen Artis Denies Sexual Assault Allegations by UNC Student
North Carolina Tar Heels junior linebacker Allen Artis proclaimed his innocence Tuesday of sexual assault allegations made against him, per Jane Stancill of the News & Observer.
“Everything was completely consensual, what happened that night,” he said. “That’s the truth. I did not rape her.”
Artis’ comments come after fellow North Carolina student Delaney Robinson held a press conference on Sept. 13 to say “she was raped on Feb. 14 at an on-campus apartment when she was intoxicated after drinking that evening,” per Stancill.
Artis was suspended from the North Carolina football team the day of the press conference.
According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), Artis turned himself in and faced two misdemeanor charges after the allegations were made public.
Stancill noted University of North Carolina police and the school’s Title IX office investigated the case, but “Robinson contended that the process had been mishandled” and said she was “asked inappropriate and accusatory questions,” per Stancill.
The Associated Press pointed out Robinson’s attorney criticized the way campus police handled a rape kit in addition to the way she was questioned after making the allegations.
Artis said Tuesday he did not provide Robinson drugs and was unaware whether she had been drinking on Feb. 14, per Stancill. He also said he didn’t know her prior to the party and found out about the criminal charges via text message.
While he is suspended from the football team, he is still attending classes at the University of North Carolina and is set to graduate in May.
