Rudy Gobert, Jazz Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Tyler ConwayOct 31, 2016

The Utah Jazz continued to solidify their young core Monday, as they announced the signing of center Rudy Gobert to a four-year, $102 million extension.

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical first reported the terms of the deal. Wojnarowski reported Tuesday that $90 million of the contract is guaranteed, and there are $3 million in annual bonus incentives worked into the deal.

Gobert took to Instagram to comment on the news:

Gobert, 24, was the sixth player drafted in 2013 to sign a long-term extension, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. C.J. McCollum, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Dennis Schroder, Steven Adams and Victor Oladipo also signed max or near-max deals. If a player from that draft class doesn't sign an extension by Monday, they will enter restricted free agency next summer.

Gobert averaged 9.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in 2015-16. In his first season as a full-time starter, Gobert played 61 games and was Utah's defensive fulcrum.

Opponents shot 41.0 percent when defended by Gobert at the rim, the best mark in the NBA among players who played at least 41 games and faced no less than five shots per contest at the hoop. The Jazz also allowed 3.1 fewer points per 100 possessions with Gobert on the floor, and their opponents shot 1.7 percent worse overall.

Gobert still can make strides on the offensive end, however. He is essentially a rim-only player, and he took just 31 shots outside five feet in 2015-16. Utah has rarely asked him to do more, but since Gobert plays alongside Derrick Favors, there have been spacing issues.

"Basketball is a pretty simple game ... especially for me at seven feet," Gobert said in September, per Aaron Falk of the Salt Lake Tribune. "Just be able to finish pretty much anywhere around the rim."

Gobert isn't ever going to stretch the floor, and that's likely fine for the Jazz. Their commitment to him, though, makes it more likely they will look to move Favors in the not-too-distant future. Also, Trey Lyles looked solid as a floor-spacing 4 during his rookie season in 2015-16 and might make for a more natural fit with Gobert.
