Vincent Kompany Injury: Manchester City Star Out 'Weeks' After Injuring Knee
The recent woes of Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany have continued, as the defender has picked up a new knee injury.
Journalist Kristof Terreur reported the latest injury to the Belgium international, which was confirmed by Sky Blues coach Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard said his skipper will be out for "weeks" with the latest knee injury.
At his best, Kompany adds so much to this City team. In defensive terms, he spots danger, wins physical battles and loves a challenge, although he's also adept at distributing from the base of the side.
He's one of the finest captains in European football. Not only does Kompany lead by example in the combative way in which he plays the game, but he's a tremendous communicator at the base of the City side.
While Kompany has been considered an irreplaceable presence in recent seasons, new manager Guardiola has had to build his squad with the captain considered a dispensable part because of his injury history.
John Stones joined for big money in the summer and has settled in well at the Etihad Stadium. Additionally, Nicolas Otamendi is enjoying a strong second season at the club, while Guardiola has also used Aleksandar Kolarov in the heart of the defence on occasion, with the Serbian adapting well.
That should worry Kompany, who has only made minimal appearances for City in recent memory. Should these injury problems continue to prevent him from nailing down a spot in Guardiola's preferred XI, the manager may have to cast a ruthless eye over how much the 30-year-old actually brings to the side.
