College Football Rankings 2016: Updated NCAA Week 4 Standings, Final Poll Review

Nate LoopSep 24, 2016

Two of the Associated Press Top 25 teams have already made it through their Week 4 games unscathed. No. 5 Clemson took down Georgia Tech 26-7 on Thursday night, and No. 24 Utah staved off an upset against USC with a 31-27 win on Friday thanks to a furious 93-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes of the game.

Those two teams' rankings are secure heading into the next week of play, but the rest of the Top 25 still have some fighting to do, and Saturday's slate of games could provide a shakeup.ย

The marquee matchup of the week, at least as ranked teams are concerned, is No. 11 Wisconsin at No. 8 Michigan State. There's also an enticing matchup between No. 17 Arkansas and No. 10 Texas A&M, as well as a big SEC battle between No. 19 Florida and No. 14 Tennessee in Knoxville.ย

There's bound to be some risers and fallers when Week 4 is all said and done. Here's how the AP and Amway Coaches polls shape up heading into Saturday.

At the top of the poll stands Alabama, and there they shall remain until someone beats them. The Crimson Tide survived a scare against rival Ole Miss last week, winning 48-43 and keeping the Rebels from earning an historic third win in a row against the esteemed, nigh-on indestructible program.ย

'Bama can come down from the intense pressure of the Ole Miss game with what should be a walkover against Kent State (1-2).ย

Rocketing up to No. 3 is Louisville, a team built around the superlative talents of quarterback Lamar Jackson. The splendid sophomore laid waste to a very good Florida State team in Week 3, passing for one touchdown against a pick and tallying four rushing touchdowns in a shocking 63-20 win.

While technically an upset, Jackson was so good, so early in the game few likely thought of the Cardinals as the upstart. Louisville will be one of the teams to watch as Jackson, who has 18 touchdowns on the season so far, keeps his Heisman campaign rolling in Week 4 against Marshall.ย

The game between Wisconsin and Michigan State will have major ramifications for the Big Ten, a conference that also has Ohio State and Michigan among the top teams in the nation. The Badgers could find it tough to move the ball in this one, as redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook makes his first startย against a tough Spartans defense that rarely budges on the ground and has a very talented secondary.ย

ESPN.com's Jesse Temple noted the Badgers defense will likely have to step up in this one with the offense potentially hamstrung in the backfield:ย

"

Two of the Badgers' top four running backs --ย Corey Clementย andย Taiwan Dealย -- are listed as questionable for Saturday's game with leg injuries. A third tailback,ย Bradrick Shaw, is out with a right shoulder injury. Throw in a rookie quarterback starting for the first time, and it could be up to the Badgers' defense to force takeaways and give the offense easier field position. Through three nonconference games, Wisconsin ranks first in the Big Ten in total defense, second in scoring defense, second in run defense and fourth in pass defense. The Badgers have also forced five turnovers. A low-scoring game would seem to benefit Wisconsin.

"

Moving a bit further down the rankings and you see No. 22 San Diego State crashing the Top 25 party, a team on a 13-game winning streak dating back to last season.

The Aztecs feature one of the few players who might challenge Jackson for the Heisman trophy in running back Donnel Pumphrey.ย

The fleet-footed back has racked up 599 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on a hefty 8.2 yards per carry this season. He's already broken Marshall Faulk's school record for career rushing yards.ย

While Pumphrey's schedule and school will work against him in the Heisman race, he's still very much up to the task. Per an interview with ESPN (via theย San Diego Union-Tribune's Kirk Kenney), Pumphrey admitted to keeping tabs on the top players in college football:

"I follow them on social media and try and challenge myself to do what they do statistics-wise. Thatโ€™s been my motivation this year, and Iโ€™ve been able to show my talents this year. My biggest goal is staying consistent.โ€ย

San Diego State is not in action in Week 4, but the team returns next week with a game against South Alabama. It gets a mention here because it has a singular talent in Pumphrey, who is one to seek out as the season moves along.ย
