Houston Adds to Bears' Injury Problems

Houston is the second notable Bears defensive player the team lost to injury on Tuesday. Head coach John Fox confirmed linebacker Danny Trevathan will need thumb surgery, per the Chicago Tribune's Rich Campbell.

This is the second time in three years Houston suffered a torn ACL. He played in eight games in 2014 before injuring his knee while celebrating during a Week 8 defeat to the New England Patriots.

The 29-year-old rebounded well in 2015, leading the Bears with eight sacks, which were also a career high.

Only two games into the season, Chicago may already be out of the playoff race. It's off to an 0-2 start and will be without Houston and Trevathan on defense for the foreseeable future. On offense, a source told NFL Media's Ian Rapoport the Bears are "preparing for a lengthy absence for quarterback Jay Cutler" after he injured his thumb.

The Bears will likely look to first-round draft pick Leonard Floyd to replace Houston at outside linebacker. In three years with the Georgia Bulldogs, Floyd had 17 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller listed Floyd as the third-best edge defender in the 2016 draft class.

The additional playing time Floyd will see as a result of Houston's injury will benefit Chicago in the long term, but the team is in trouble in the short term with so many key players unavailable.
