Danny Woodhead Injury Update: Chargers RB Diagnosed with Torn ACL

Timothy RappSep 19, 2016

Danny Woodhead tore his ACL in the San Diego Chargers' win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and was placed on injured reserve, the Chargers announced on Monday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was first to announce the news.

Woodhead later commented on his injury via his Instagram account with the following caption:

Woodhead, 31, rushed for 116 yards on 19 carries and caught six passes for 35 yards and a score in the team's first two games and looked as though he would once again be a crucial playmaker in the offense.

Woodhead now becomes the team's second skill-position player on offense to tear an ACL. In Week 1, top wideout Keenan Allen also tore his ACL, which means the Chargers are now without their two leading receivers from 2015.

Replacing either player will be virtually impossible for San Diego, but the team will miss Woodhead's unique skill set, as Conor Orr of NFL.com noted:

Indeed, few players in the NFL are capable of making an impact in both the pass and run games like Woodhead. He's become one of Philip Rivers' safety nets in the passing game and regularly turns short dump-off passes into significant gains, making him a difficult matchup for opposing defenses.

With Woodhead out for the year, Melvin Gordon will need to play an even bigger role in the offense. The second-year back has played well this season, rushing for 159 yards and three touchdowns while catching three passes for another 18 yards.

Kenneth Farrow will likely see additional snaps and touches for the team as well.
