WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from September 14
Bobby Roode made his glorious television debut, but it was Samoa Joe's sneak attack that grabbed headlines on the September 14 episode of NXT.
Joe brutalized Shinsuke Nakamura, leaving the champion unconscious and in need of medical attention. This after learning he will get his rematch against The King of Strong Style.
Roode battled No Way Jose in the night's main event and realized fairly quickly that the fun-loving party-goer is not above throwing fists when the time is right.
Liv Morgan, Hideo Itami and The Authors of Pain were also in action as NXT continued to flesh out the men and women who will lead it into the future.
Who emerged victorious and how did this week's matches affect the brand's coming weeks and months?
Take a look with this recap of the September 14 show.
Samoa Joe Attacks Shinsuke Nakamura
1 of 5Samoa Joe kicked off this week's broadcast, calling out NXT champion Shinsuke Nakamura.
Joe admitted Nakamura is a deserving champion and demanded a rematch. The new titleholder accepted the challenge quickly. After a sign of respect in the form of a handshake, it appeared as though Joe would let Nakamura take the spotlight.
Joe attacked, though, laying Nakamura out at ringside with a uranage suplex onto the steel steps.
"I did this to you," he yelled as medics checked on the champion.
Grade
B+
Analysis
It is difficult to imagine the degree to which Nakamura is the master of the mind game he would put himself in position to be attacked by Joe in the fashion he was.
With that said, this was a strong segment that introduced the next TakeOver special's main event and established Joe as the radical for champion prepared to do whatever it takes to win back his title, even if it means putting the new champion out of action permanently.
Liv Morgan vs. Rachael Fazio
2 of 5
Liv Morgan returned to action Wednesday night against Rachael Fazio, also known as Rachael Ellering to independent fans. That her father Paul is a character on the show probably necessitated the change in last names.
Shortly into the match, which lasted under two minutes, Morgan trapped Fazio in the guillotine submission for the tapout victory.
Result
Liv Morgan defeated Rachael Fazio.
Grade
D-
Analysis
Not only can nothing be accomplished in under two minutes, but the fact the commentators were focused on updating us on Nakamura's condition rather than calling the action in the ring also suggests this was little more than time filler.
How that is supposed to help Liv Morgan get over as one of the faces of women's wrestling in NXT is a mystery.
Hideo Itami vs. Drew Gulak
3 of 5Drew Gulak, a familiar face to independent fans and viewers of WWE's Cruiserweight Classic, returned to NXT to battle Hideo Itami.
It did not go so well for him.
The celebrated Japanese star returned a slap with one of his own. From there, Gulak found himself on the receiving end of Itami's vicious, ferocious kicks.
Eventually, the Go To Sleep ended it as Itami appears to have officially taken it on as his finisher going forward.
Result
Hideo Itami defeated Drew Gulak.
Grade
C-
Analysis
Itami is more focused and ferocious than he has ever been. This was a fine little showcase match for him, even if the choice of Gulak was a bit interesting given his stature within the wrestling community.
This feels like the Itami we should have seen from the beginning rather than the somewhat disappointing star fans were subjected to earlier. Now back and 100 percent, might we see his best work under the NXT banner to come?
The Authors of Pain Squash the Opposition
4 of 5
The opposition, unnamed, never stood a chance.
The Authors of Pain delivered a sick powerbomb and secured the victory with a combination clothesline/neckbreaker.
Result
The Authors of Pain defeated unnamed opponents.
Grade
D-
Analysis
This show continued to slog through the sludge with another squash, with this one doing nothing to advance The Authors of Pain's storyline. They remain directionless, nowhere to go given the current scarcity of teams in NXT.
With The Revival mixing it up with Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, and TM61 already having jobbed to them, there simply is nothing for the impressive big men to do.
No Way Jose vs. Bobby Roode
5 of 5Bobby Roode looked to make a glorious debut on NXT TV Wednesday night but nearly found out the hard way that No Way Jose is more of a fighter than anyone expected.
Jose stunned Roode early, controlling the action heading into the break.
It did not take long for the former TNA champion to shift the momentum, though. Late in the match, Jose mounted a comeback and tried for his baseball punch but had it blocked by the master of The Glorious Bomb.
Roode eventually scored the win with a DDT, adding another defeat to Jose's suddenly not-so-impressive win-loss record.
Result
Bobby Roode defeated No Way Jose.
Grade
C
Analysis
At eight minutes, this was the show's longest match, but it still felt like a glorified squash.
Sure, Jose got in more offense than any of the other poor souls demolished by their more recognizable competition Wednesday night, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Roode looked good and, more importantly, motivated. He looked like a guy, in the prime of his career, determined to make it back to the top of the industry. If he can continue building momentum for himself, that should happen sooner than later.
