Real Madrid Transfer News: Latest Gianluigi Donnarumma, Luka Modric Rumours

James DudkoSep 9, 2016

Agent Mino Raiola has stated Real Madrid aren't interested in signing his client, AC Milan's teenage star Gianluigi Donnarumma. But Raiola insists the 17-year-old goalkeeper can become the world's best at his position.

Meanwhile, Luka Modric is one of four big-name stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, set to receive new contracts from Los Blancos. Moving to secure the futures of core stars is a clear response to Real's recently incurred FIFA transfer ban, one prohibiting the club from registering new players until 2018.

Los Merengues shouldn't expect to sign Donnarumma even then. Raiola doesn't even believe the 11-time European Cup winners are keen on the precocious stopper, per Spanish radio station Cadena Cope (h/t ESPN FC's Adriana Garcia):Ā "There is no interest from Real Madrid in him [Donnarumma]. [But] If Donnarumma continues to grow as he is doing and if things go as planned, he is going to be the best goalkeeper in the world one day."

Raiola's words come after Donnarumma himself played down talk of a move to the Spanish capital. He recently made it clear how he remains committed to life with the Rossoneri, according to Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t ESPN FC's Jack Rathborn):Ā "My objective is only to train day after day and do well with Milan."

Real are already well-stocked between the sticks, thanks to the presence of Costa Rica's Keylor Navas. Yet, if they were looking for a youthful understudy to the 29-year-old, Los Blancos wouldn't find a better one than Donnarumma.

Still, the current Real squad has options of its own. Specifically, 18-year-old Luca Zidane, son of manager Zinedine Zidane, is under consideration.

In fact, Zidane the younger has been included in the matchday squad for the upcoming home match with Osasuna in LaLiga, according to Marca. However, the report hinted the manager may have different reasons for the selection:

"

Dad Zinedine is angry at FIFA for including his children in the recent sanction on the club and decided to put his son in the squad as an act of defiance. He will of course have to discard Luca from the final selection and well before the teams are announced on Saturday.

"

Indeed, Zidane senior recently branded the transfer ban handed to his club "absurd," per Goal's Joe Fisher.

At the moment, Real are reliant on Kiko Casilla as the primary backup for Navas. Having to wait until 2018 for fresh recruits could hurt Los Blancos at other positions.

But a lot can happen in football in that time. If Real are really keen on Milan's prodigy stopper, they may have a better chance of turning Donnarumma's head in 2018.

Modric Among 4 Ready for New Contracts

Real have been hamstrung regarding signing new players, but the club can at least take steps to keep the best of the incumbents around for longer. Modric, Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos will soon be offered lucrative new deals, according to Pete Jenson of MailOnline.

It's a marquee quartet, and Modric's name is probably the least high profile of the bunch. Yet his importance to the club can't be overstated.

B/R's Dean Jones recently expressed his belief that Modric is now the complete midfielder:

The Daily Mirror's Ed Malyon referred to the Croatian playmaker as Real's "beating heart last season." He also noted how Modric and Kroos will be in the "fourth tier" of the club's wage structure should they sign new terms.

Malyon's description of Modric is an apt one, since all of Real's best plays flow from the diminutive schemer. He's one of the game's great recyclers of the ball, a master of one- and two-touch passing.

Modric has the pass-and-move patience to dictate possession in any area of the pitch. He's begun to thrive deeper with Real during recent seasons.

However, Modric is the key influence on Madrid's game no matter where he plays. He provides the balance at the heart of a superb midfield trio, between Brazilian destroyer Casemiro and the more forward-thinking Kroos.

Even at 31, retaining Modric would be a brilliant move for the current UEFA Champions League holders.

Real can survive the transfer ban if they keep what is a deep and talented existing squad together. With youngsters like Marco Asensio already breaking through, Los Blancos don't need to raid other clubs for young talent.

They can simply supplement their ranks with a few more academy graduates.
