Swansea vs. Chelsea: Antonio Conte's Key Pre-Match Press Conference Quotes
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has said summer signings David Luiz and Marcos Alonso can improve his squad, although it's unlikely either player will start in Sunday's Premier League clash at Swansea City.Ā
The Blues boss suggested his two late defensive signings are good assets to the team, per Chelsea's official Twitter account, but it will take time for the pair to adapt to his philosophies, per Goal's Nizaar Kinsella:
The former Juventus and Italy coach detailed Luiz will play in central defence, because that's the area in which he needed resources this summer.
Before Sunday's clash at the Liberty Stadium, Premier League attention will turn toward Saturday's Manchester derby at Old Trafford, although Conte's mind is focused elsewhere:
Chelsea currently sit as joint-leaders in the English top flight alongside both Manchester United and Manchester City, each of whom are yet to drop a point after three games in the 2016-17 season.
Despite a strong start to his first term in the Premier League, Conte refused to be drawn into a discussion regarding favourites for the crown, citing Leicester City's 2015-16 triumph as cause for caution, per ESPN FC's Liam Twomey:
Despite winning all of their matches so far this season, it took Chelsea until their Week 3 clash against Burnley to keep their first clean sheet of the campaign.
Luiz's acquisition could also mean Conte's Chelsea are ready to adopt a three-man defence, as he deployed during his tenures with Juve and Italy, and he confirmed that tactic may not be far off:
The Brazil international made his return to Stamford Bridge after a two-year jaunt with Paris Saint-Germain, coming back to west London for almost £20 million less than the fee that took him to Ligue 1.
However, his new manager feels Luiz is close enough to his prime to still produce his best form and gain a new reputation on the global scale:
Swansea have lost back-to-back games against Hull City and Leicester City since defeating Burnley 1-0 in their 2016-17 opener.
Conte will look to extend his 100-percent start to life at the Chelsea helm in his first Premier League trip to south Wales, where Luiz and Alonso have a chance of getting their first action since joining this summer.
