Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Yacine Brahimi, Oliver Burke Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenSep 2, 2016

FC Porto reportedly turned down Everton's transfer move for Yacine Brahimi because they were hoping for an even better offer from Liverpool, according to the Portuguese press. Meanwhile, it is said manager Jurgen Klopp is not happy his scouts allowed young target Oliver Burke to join RB Leipzig over the Reds.

According to O Jogo (h/t the Daily Mirror's Jack Rathborn), Porto turned down a £33.6 million offer from Everton for Algeria international Brahimi, one of many setbacks the Toffees suffered during the summer window.

It now seems the Dragons were willing to move the 26-year-old, but they were anticipating an even larger offer from Liverpool, which never came. The Mirror's Ed Malyon previously reported that Porto had a fixed price in mind:

Brahimi has been with Porto since 2014 and has mainly played as an attacking midfielder or winger for the Portuguese giants. Blessed with tremendous physical tools, he's been a big factor in Algeria's rise to the top of African football and has been a stellar force for Porto as well.

The Portuguese side are known as shrewd negotiators, and several pundits frowned when the club turned down the £33.6 million offer, which seemed more than fair for the midfielder.

Ted Knutson of StatsBomb doesn't rate Brahimi that highly:

It's difficult to argue with that sentiment. Per WhoScored.com, Brahimi's scoring numbers have been rather disappointing save for a magical run in the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League during which he found the net five times.

For all of his talent, the production has never followed, and he wouldn't find it easier scoring or assisting in the Premier League. Here's a look at some of his highlights:

It also makes you wonder why Porto might have thought they could receive an even bigger transfer fee from Liverpool, a club that already has a number of productive, class attacking midfielders like Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

The Reds didn't have to invest in the position and completed their incoming transfer business early in the window―at no point did Klopp and company seem likely to spend a ton of cash at the end of August.

Signing a star youngster like Burke did make sense, and according to the Sun (h/t the Daily Mirror's Liam Corless), Klopp was “furious” when Burke ended up signing for Bundesliga newcomers RB Leipzig on a five-year deal.

The 19-year-old from Nottingham Forest had been linked with a move to Anfield for some time, and his £13 million move to Germany surprised a lot of people, including Outside of the Boot:

Burke had already contributed to five goals in the Championship this season and is widely considered the best young Scottish talent today.

Klopp has a wonderful reputation when it comes to talent development, and he loved adding young players in the mold of Burke during his time with Borussia Dortmund. If the Reds were as interested as is suggested, it's a little embarrassing to lose a British player to a club that is only playing its first-ever campaign in Germany's top division.

The Reds have more than enough talent in the attacking third to be a force in the 2016-17 season, however, so the loss of Burke is something the club shouldn't dwell on for too long.
