San Jose Sharks: Does Drew Remenda Think Before He Speaks?

Josh PearlsteinOct 3, 2009

It happened again.  I was going to write about one thing and ending up writing about something completely different. I even had my introduction written.

I wanted to elaborate on a comment made in my last piece about how being a hockey fan is like being in a cult. Guess that article is going to have to wait.

Let me begin with a question: Do you think that Doug Wilson, the Sharks GM, smacks himself on the head anytime Drew Remenda speaks? He must, right?

I just can imagine every member of the Sharks' operations department walking around with a hand imprint on their forehead the day after a game. They must—it happens to me, and I am not nearly as emotionally invested in the game as they are.

For example (and the reason for the change in focus of the article): Tonight, at the end of the second intermission, the Sharks announcers Remenda and Randy Hahn were asked if they thought Rob Blake was a good choice for captain. Both Remenda and Hahn gave sound answers.

They sold me that the right decision was made in regards to team leadership. (Marleau should still have an "A" though—see Mike Modano—but that is outside the realm of this article.)

Unfortunately, Drew did not stop there. He had to keep going. He had to talk about how Dan Boyle can learn from Rob Blake, so he could be the captain next year.

Remenda managed to announce Rob Blake's retirement just two games into the season, and name the 11th captain in Sharks history.  Remenda was talking about how Boyle can learn from how Blake deals with adversity, and how Blake does this and Blake does that.

The players know that Remenda does not make the decision about who wears the "C", but that doesn't mean it won't be used against the organization by an outside source. There was undoubtedly an advantage in leaving the letters up for grabs in camps. You can see the results of it already.

Remanda fails to realize that that what he says reflects on the organization. I would not be surprised to see a disclaimer prior to the next game saying something along the lines of, "the views expressed during the broadcast are not representative of the actual views of the San Jose Sharks."

I love Drew. Though he may be the most bias color man in the league, at least it is in favor of the Sharks, so I don't mind.

As a Sharks' fan you cannot help but enjoy it. He makes every member of team teal sound like an all star. He made Alexi Semenov sound like an adequate defenseman—Semenov didn't earn a spot on an NHL roster this year.

Drew is at his best when he is he is interviewing players in non-game associated functions, especially Sharks' Byte. However, I am not sure if I am laughing with him or at him.

Regardless, he is entertaining.
