Frank de Boer Appointed Inter Milan Head Coach: Latest Details and Reaction

Matt JonesAug 8, 2016

Inter Milan have appointed Frank de Boer as their new head coach, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

The news was relayed in a statement on Inter’s official website, in which it’s noted the Dutchman has agreed a three-year deal. De Boer replaces former boss Roberto Mancini following his departure on Monday.

The Serie A side revealed their new chief will be unveiled at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Inter posted the following clip on their Twitter feed of De Boer addressing the club’s supporters:

The Dutchman arrives in Milan boasting a brilliant pedigree as both a footballer and manager.

In his playing days, the 46-year-old represented both Ajax and Barcelona with distinction, as well as picking up 112 caps for the Netherlands. De Boer won five league titles with the Amsterdam outfit, as well as the UEFA Champions League in the 1994-95 season; he won La Liga once with Barca, too.

As Ajax manager he also enjoyed success. De Boer guided the club to four consecutive league titles in his first four seasons in charge, brought through young players and maintained the traditions of the iconic team.

He left Ajax at the end of the 2015-16 term after two years without a league title; De Boer saw his team usurped on the final day of last season by PSV Eindhoven in dramatic fashion. Nevertheless, as these numbers from OptaPaolo illustrate, his side were mainly clinical in front of goal throughout his tenure:

De Boer faces a difficult job at the San Siro. Inter are a sleeping giant of European football, and they’re a long way behind champions Juventus, not to mention challenging the likes of AS Roma and Napoli for spots in the Champions League.

Mancini’s side was robust and defensively sound last season but lacked the spark needed to regularly break down teams in the attacking third.

Given his own elegance as a footballer and the stylish manner in which his Ajax sides played, expect De Boer to bring a more expansive playing style to the San Siro in an attempt to galvanise the Nerazzurri.
