Joey Bosa's Mom Says She Wishes Son 'Pulled an Eli Manning' on Draft Day
Rookie defensive lineman Joey Bosa still hasn't attended San Diego Chargers training camp, and his mother reportedly brought up a painful chapter in the franchise's history when discussing the contract dispute between the two sides.
"It bums me out for him so much," Bosa's mother said Sunday in a Facebook comment regarding the impasse between the Chargers and the No. 3 overall pick, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day."
The Chargers selected Manning with the No. 1 overall pick in 2004, but his father, Archie, said he didn't want his son to play in San Diego before the draft, per Gehlken. The Chargers proceeded to trade Manning to the New York Giants in exchange for a package that included quarterback Philip Rivers.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Manning has won two Super Bowls in the Big Apple, while the Chargers have made the playoffs once since the 2009 season.
Gehlken wrote that Bosa is the only 2016 draft pick who's not in camp at this point, and the Chargers haven't talked to the Ohio State product's agent in 10 days.
Nunzio Ingrassia of FoxSports.com described the root of the problem:
"Bosa's holdout, which is the longest since the 2011 labor deal that simplified the process of signing rookies, stems from offset language in his fully guaranteed deal. The Chargers want to defer a sizeable amount of his signing bonus to 2017 while he seeks either no offset language of the bonus to be paid in full in 2016.
"
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Chargers must trade Bosa by Tuesday if they plan on doing so before signing him. The collective bargaining agreement mandates that they have until 30 days before the start of the regular season (Sept. 8) to trade his draft rights.
However, Florio pointed out the Chargers haven't entertained the thought of trading the potentially dominant defender as the 2016 campaign approaches even though the contract stalemate persists.
Gehlken made sure to clarify that the Facebook comments were from Bosa's mother, not from the former Buckeyes star, but it is yet another twist in the saga.
San Diego could use Bosa along the defensive line in 2016. The Chargers finished 24th in the league last year with 32 sacks and are in a division that includes the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.
Bosa was a consensus All-American in each of his last two years at Ohio State and tallied 26 sacks over three collegiate seasons. He was an overpowering force in 2014 with 13.5 sacks, as his Buckeyes went on to win the inaugural College Football Playoff. He would ideally slide right into the Chargers starting lineup.
San Diego's training camp will continue Monday with the team's seventh practice.
