Olympic 2016 Results: Tracking Medal Count for Each Country on Saturday
After a memorable opening ceremony in Rio last night, the 2016 Summer Olympics got underway for many competitors on Saturday, including America’s very own Virginia Thrasher, who won the United States’ first gold medal of the Games after finishing in first place in the women's 10-meter air rifle event.
Thrasher was able to hold off China’s Du Li while setting an Olympic record score of 208. Thrasher is ranked No. 23 in the world, while Du had been dominant in qualifying.
Tearing through her competition, the 19-year old shot a 10.5 on her first shot of the elimination round and 10.4 on her second. Thrasher had a cumulative score of 208.0 to beat Du, a two-time gold medallist, by a point.
China's Yi Siling, who won this event at the 2012 Olympics, claimed the bronze medal.
According to the Guardian, Thrasher was the first collegiate freshman to win both NCAA individual titles while helping West Virginia secure the team title. She followed that feat by dominating the Olympic trials less than a month later.
While Thrasher has to be enjoying her first taste of Olympic gold, there are other events happening later on Saturday with athletes who are vying for the same type of success.
In cycling, a gold medal is at stake in what is known as a grueling and, to quote Tour de France winner and Great Britain hopeful Chris Froome from an interview with Sky Sports News, a “savage” road course.
"I'm definitely a bit nervous as we get closer to race day now. This is a pretty savage course," Froome said. "I'm looking forward to it, though. I think we have got a great team and, hopefully, we are in with a good shot."

There are only two American riders competing in cycling at the Rio Games, but the Olympics debut of 32-year-old Brent Bookwalter holds a lot of promise for the United States to medal. Bookwalter is accompanied by teammate Taylor Phinney.
While U.S. cycling is a two-man show in Rio, fencing is certainly a woman's game on Saturday.
The women’s epee team includes a pair of sisters, Courtney and Kelley Hurley, while Ibtihaj Muhammad will become America's first Muslim-American participant to compete in a hijab when she takes the stage on Saturday.
Here’s a list of the various fencing events taking place today. The matches involving the United States are singled out (all times ET):

Elsewhere, the judo could hold some intrigue.
The biggest storyline in the sport is Kosovo's Majlinda Kelmendi, a world champion in judo who is finally able to compete for her country of Kosovo in this year's Games.
In other sporting events happening later today, USA's own Brady Ellison leads the way for the American archery team as it looks to improve on a silver-medal finish in the 2012 Games in London.

Arguably the most popular event in the Summer Games, swimming kicks off later today with the men's 400-meter individual medley followed by the women's 100-meter butterfly, men's 400-meter freestyle, women's 400-meter individual medley and the men's 100-meter breaststroke.
America's most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, won't be swimming until Monday, when he competes in the the men's 200-meter butterfly, but there are still plenty of quality American swimmers to watch on Saturday, such as Katie Ledecky, who will look to dominate in Rio this year.
Let's just hope that America's swimmers are better in the pool than they are at singing karaoke:
