Arsenal Transfer News: Jason Denayer, Matthias Ginter, Latest Gunners Rumours

Christopher SimpsonJul 19, 2016

Arsenal are reportedly hoping to sign either Jason Denayer of Manchester City or Matthias Ginter of Borussia Dortmund this summer as they seek to reinforce their defensive options.

According to an exclusive from the Sun's Daniel Cutts, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is looking for a versatile defender and has identified the pair as possibilities having monitored both players in recent years.

Denayer is reportedly hoping to leave for regular football, while Ginter "is believed to be up for sale," with both expected to cost in the region of £10 million and £12 million apiece.

An unnamed "City source" said of Denayer: "Denayer signed a new contract last summer. He is rated at about £15 million at the club and is on around £25,000-a-week. Arsenal have been interested before just over a year ago but only bid £5 million. There was no follow-up offer at the time, but Wenger is a fan."

Both defenders fit the versatility requirement Wenger is looking for. Both are primarily centre-backs but have recently spent time at right-back—Ginter thriving there in particular—and the German is also capable of playing as a holding midfielder if needed.

Football writer Oli Price-Bates gave his take on the speculation:

Indeed, Cutts reported that City are in pursuit of Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci—should they capture him, Denayer looks even more likely to leave.

The Belgium international spent last season on loan at Galatasaray. Here are some of his best moments:

Meanwhile, DW Sports' Stefan Bienkowski has been impressed with Ginter and believes BVB should keep him:

Here's a look at the pair's league stats from last year, per Squawka:

Denayer and Ginter could each prove useful to Arsenal, and at 21 and 22, respectively, there's still plenty of room for them to develop their game.

Of the two, Denayer seems the easier to land given City's array of options, but Dortmund often struggle to keep hold of their players—Henrikh Mhitaryan, Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels have already left this summer—so Ginter isn't out of the question either.

Meanwhile, according to the Telegraph's John Percy, Leicester City value Riyad Mahrez at over £45 million, and Jamie Styles of the Daily Star claims Arsenal are among those rumoured to be in pursuit of him.

The Foxes seemingly base his price tag on Liverpool receiving £49 million for Raheem Sterling, and after Mahrez won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year last season they want to ensure they're well-compensated if he's sold.

Given Wenger's frugal nature, such a valuation is likely to ward off Arsenal at the very least.
