Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns Announced for WWE Battleground
Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, all former members of The Shield, will battle for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Battleground on July 24.
Shane McMahon announced the match in seemingly spontaneous fashion on Monday Night Raw, as WWE's Twitter account showed:
After Reigns held the title for most of the year, Rollins got a brief taste, but now Ambrose will get his chance to defend the belt after cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase Sunday night.
Ambrose won the coveted contract to compete for the world championship Sunday, and he used it almost immediately to win the title by coming out and pinning Rollins after he took down previous titleholder Reigns.
As Reigns and Rollins faced off again Monday to determine who would challenge for the belt at Battleground, the tension was evident, with both men having lost the title one night earlier.
With Ambrose looking on, the match ended in a no-contest decision. However, Reigns was able to get one of his famous Spears in, as WWE showed:
After Ambrose and Reigns exchanged words, Ambrose went after his former friend, per WWE:
Ambrose then made a bold request to McMahon, per WWE:
WWE has been trying to decide who to push as the sport's perennial titleholder, with all three members of The Shield rising to the top.
Hall of Famer Mick Foley noted Ambrose has been making a strong case:
Instead of going with various narratives, WWE will now have the three men decide who its top guy will be in the ring. The storyline has been in the making ever since the trio broke up, and it'll culminate in what should be an epic match at Battleground.
