Brazil vs. Peru Betting Odds Preview, Copa America Prediction
Brazil and Peru will be battling for first place in Group B on Sunday when they meet at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Brazilians were heavy favorites to win Group B heading into Copa America play, and they are unbeaten in the past 16 meetings with the Peruvians.
That is one reason Brazil is a -215 betting favorite (wager $215 to win $100) for the match at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark.
Match Odds: Brazil -215, Peru +575, Draw +340 (Matchup Report)
A scoreless tie with Ecuador in its Copa America opener last Saturday has put Brazil in this position where one of the favorites to win the tournament at the sportsbooks now needs at least a tie to win Group B.
Then again, Peru’s 2-2 tie with Ecuador on Wednesday also gave it the opportunity to do the same thing with a victory over the Brazilians despite being a large underdog.
Brazil followed up its first effort with a resounding 7-1 win over Haiti on Wednesday in Orlando, Florida, to secure the tiebreaker against Peru if they end up deadlocked. The Brazilians dominated every aspect of the game versus the Haitians with a 20-9 edge in shots, including 13-4 on goal.
They did not mess around, taking a 3-0 lead before halftime on a pair of goals from Philippe Coutinho and another from Renato Augusto, and led 5-0 before surrendering Haiti’s lone score.
Peru edged Haiti, 1-0, in its Copa America opener last Saturday in Seattle, getting the game-winning goal from Paolo Guerrero in the 61st minute. The Peruvians took twice as many shots as the Haitians (10-5), with a 5-1 advantage on goal.
On Wednesday in Glendale, Arizona, they got goals from Christian Cuevas and Edison Flores in the first 13 minutes of the game for an early 2-0 lead against Ecuador before their opponent fought back with one score just before halftime and another right after the intermission. Ecuador outshot Peru, 18-9, but had to settle for the tie.
Brazil has outscored Peru, 6-2, in going 2-0-1 over the last three head-to-head matchups, including a 1-1 tie back in 2009. The last win for the Peruvians in the series came in 1985. They may need to pull off the upset win here to advance to the quarters depending on what happens when Ecuador plays Haiti earlier in the day at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
A victory by the Ecuadorians in addition to them scoring two more goals than the Peruvians if they tie the Brazilians would give the former second place over the latter if it comes down to that. History says Peru would be lucky to tie, though, and an easy Brazil win is the more likely outcome.
Brazil vs. Peru Prediction: 3-1 Brazil
