Manchester United Transfer News: Miralem Pjanic, David De Gea, Latest Rumours

Tom SunderlandJun 1, 2016

Manchester United will battle Chelsea in the hunt to sign AS Roma star Miralem Pjanic this summer, and the Red Devils may face another fight to keep hold of David De Gea amid Real Madrid's revived interest.

According to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star's Alex Harris), newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho will take on his former club in an attempt to sign Pjanic for a fee of €38 million (£29 million).

That's the valuation of Pjanic's release clause at the Stadio Olimpico, and several factors point to the possibility of the 26-year-old leaving the Giallorossi this summer.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international has proved himself as one of Europe's elite playmaking talents since moving to Italy's capital from Lyon in 2011, as illustrated by WhoScored.com:

A report from Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claimed Pjanic is chasing a substantial pay rise if he's to sign a new contract with Roma, one the Serie A titans aren't likely to afford (h/t Football Italia).

That could open the door for the likes of United and Chelsea to contend for his services, although Juventus are said to be the front-runners for his signature.

The Red Devils may also make room in attacking midfield this summer, after Sky Sports reported Mourinho has deemed Juan Mata surplus to requirements (h/t the Sun's Tom Sheen).

Mourinho sold Mata to United while at Chelsea in 2014, and it's not beyond comprehension that the Portuguese would do so again this summer in a bid to enforce his plans at the club, per the Sun's Dream Team:

Meanwhile, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reopened the debate as to whether his club will come back in for United goalkeeper De Gea this summer following the close shave that occurred in 2015.

Perez gave United fans some hope when speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca (h/t Daily Star's Luke Gardener) this week, however, after suggesting it would be too difficult to manage both De Gea and the in-form Keylor Navas.

He said: "I am not the one who has to decide. I would say it is very difficult to manage two great players in that position and elsewhere."

Those comments suggest it's up to manager Zinedine Zidane as to whether De Gea is even needed at the Santiago Bernabeu, considering Costa Rica No. 1 Navas was so consistent en route to the club's UEFA Champions League win.

A late filing error was allegedly all that prevented De Gea and Navas from swapping clubs last summer, and the Manchester Evening News detailed its response to the new speculation:

Perez also went on to confirm Real are yet to receive any offers for James Rodriguez, who has been linked with United: "We've had no offer for anyone, nor have we spoken about the future. Everyone goes on holidays now, so we can work without pressure. James arrived late [last summer] and started at a disadvantage. Others were playing well. He is one of the great players we have."

Rodriguez was an unused substitute in the Champions League final and has played only a bit-part role under Zidane, but it seems the Spanish giants aren't looking to cash in on their winger just yet.
