Settling The Debate: Why Chappell's Interception Was a Good Call

Josh DittonSep 30, 2009

Alright, I feel I need to write this because there's been some confusion. ย People seem to think that the officials that ruled Warren intercepted Chappell's pass with 2:29 left to go in regulation cost Indiana a game-winning drive, which would've resulted in Indiana upsetting Michigan at the big house, and Michigan would have nose-dived into oblivion, like the 2008 season.

Michigan haters, I am here to show you WHY it was a good call.

Pictures are worth a million words, right?

Let's begin with the following picture. ย The IU player has an inside position, but clearly does not have the ball, Donovan Warren does.

As the two guys start to go to the ground, who does it look like has possession to you?

This next frame is the "knee down" frame.

Who has possession after all of this?

Donovan Warren clearly has possession and is on the ground.

Donovan Warren CLEARLY intercepted the ball, and it was a good call.

Now, on the sidelines, this is what most of you saw:

Now, the sideline shot is very inconclusive and shows us nothing - that is what many people saw who said it was a bad call. ย But I encourage you to look at the angle facing the end zone, and you will see that the refs did, in fact, make the right call.

No more about how Rich Rod paid off the refs, how Michigan is cheating, etc. ย None. ย Michigan won, Michigan is 4-0 at the moment, and there is no need for people to be throwing accusations around at all. ย What happened, happened. ย It is done and over.

Perhaps that could've been a game-winning drive for Indiana. ย But should they have needed it?

IU only scored on 1 of the 4 times we let them in the red zone. ย Instead of making a fuss about this interception that so horribly ruined the Hoosiers' upset bid, why are people not making a fuss about how Indiana had terrible red-zone offense?

Enough people, we've got a rivalry to focus on!

GO BLUE!
