Seth Rollins Double Turn at WWE Money in the Bank Would Cement Top Face Status

Graham GSM MatthewsMay 27, 2016

Coming off his highly anticipated return at Extreme Rules 2016, Seth Rollins is set to take WWE's summer season by storm, starting with the Money in the Bank pay-per-view next month.

But if his past few appearances have been any indication, he is destined to be a breakout babyface before long.

At the time Rollins got injured and went under the knife last November, he was undoubtedly the MVP of WWE programming. That much became evident once the quality of Raw decreased significantly in his absence, as the roster lacked a credible top heel.

Although fans were skeptical at first of how he would fare as a heel when he initially turned on The Shield back in June 2014, he exceeded everyone's expectations by effectively getting under the skin of fans and adapting his in-ring style to that of a villain.

He remained the company's best all-around wrestler, but no longer was he doing dives to please the audience. Rather, he did everything in his power to ensure they despised him, which is what makes any good heel an exceptional one.

While Rollins could still excel as a bad guy even now, it would be foolish to fight the fanfare he has received since returning from injury.

Thus, it is imperative that WWE book a double turn with the self-proclaimed architect of The Shield in his WWE World Heavyweight Championship match with Roman Reigns at Money in the Bank.

As someone who was in attendance for Sunday's Extreme Rules, I can safely say I have never heard a babyface booed as loudly as Reigns was in person, not even John Cena. It has surpassed the point where WWE can ignore the mega-heat he has been eliciting, and it is high time the company started embracing it.

Officials are apparently determined to transition Reigns into Cena's spot as the "face of the company," but at the rate he is going, it might take longer than expected. As has been pitched before, turning him heel before becoming a babyface again down the road would be the best possible path for him at the moment.

There is still a chance WWE will flip the switch with him sometime soon, but for now, he will be positioned as the company's No. 1 babyface. As long as he is feuding with Rollins, however, The Man will continue to overshadow him as the more popular fan favorite.

A portion of the fanbase was disappointed with Rollins' return as a heel this past week, especially following the raucous reaction he received at the event. A face turn for the uber-over Rollins essentially wrote itself, but alas, all hope is not yet lost.

It actually made more sense for him to be reintroduced as a heel, as that was what he was the last time he appeared on programming. Only after a double turn at the pending pay-per-view will his top face status in the company be cemented.

At first, Rollins endeared himself to the audience during his promo on Raw, only to turn on them and blame the fans for never supporting him to begin with. He was still the same snarky coward he was a year ago, but the biggest difference this time around is that he is no longer associated with The Authority.

Upon bumping into Stephanie McMahon on Monday night, Rollins looked happy to see her, but Stephanie noted that their professional relationship was over. There is a real possibility that her statement was merely meant to be a swerve, but otherwise, seeds were seemingly planted for a future faceoff between Rollins and his mentor, Triple H.

That has been the money match all along, dating back to when he first joined forces with The Authority two years ago. It would be wise to book that epic encounter sooner rather than later instead of waiting until WrestleMania 33 in the spring of 2017.

In turning Rollins, it would be logical for Reigns to go rogue simultaneously. It would present The Big Dog with a fresh set of challengers for the next several months, including John Cena, Dean Ambrose, Cesaro and others.

For the past five years, Money in the Bank has been the home of monumental moments and controversial happenings, so there wouldn't be a better place to do the double turn than on June 19.
