Washington State Football Will Still Be 'Wild Ride'
Coming off a terrific, successful season of basketball, Washington State football has been getting a ton of coverage.Ā
Heck, summer voluntary practice sessions haven't even begun for new head coach Paul Wulff and the players staying on campus. So what's the big deal about Cougar football these days?
Once again, bloggers and the media have it wrong. Way wrong.
There's a boatload of articles covering the release of a signed recruit who was slated to arrive in Pullman in time for fall practice. The young man had to finish his senior season of high school before joining the other incoming freshman and transfer students. He graduated, but won't be attending WSU.
This kid, and he is a kid in terms of chronology, has been the target of good writers, bad writers and a plethora of writers falling between the extremities of talent.
So what did he do? He has been cited, though not yet convicted, for a series of incidents ranging from DUI to possession of marijuana.
No, this writer isn't going to jump on the bandwagon and name this young man. Leave that to others who have little substantive content to contribute to a dialog about Washington State football.
This kid won't be attending Washington State. His life will go on elsewhere. But why blow up over his immaturity? Why is that so newsworthy, spawning over a hundred articles documenting a tortured view of his situation?
All of Cougar Nation is looking forward to an exciting year of Pac-10 football. First-year coach Wulff is going to have his hands full. He's bringing in a new offense. He'll be installing a different defense from last season. And he'll be doing all of that while trying to establish the Wulff era at WSU.
There's plenty of issues and topics to wax on about. Pontificating over the mistakes of a very young and immature student-athlete serves little purpose.
Or does it?
Could some of these saintly writers be pointing their wagging fingers in an attempt to deflect attention from their past mistakes?
Here's a fact. Cougar football is going to be a wild ride this coming season.Ā
Period.
And that's what my future articles will be talking about. Things that are possible and positive will be the target of my stories from here on out.
