WWE Extreme Rules 2016: Matches Sure to Cause Controversy Among Fans

Sebastian MaldonadoMay 14, 2016

WWE’s upcoming Extreme Rules event is a powder keg waiting to explode.

This year’s installment will take place next Sunday, May 22, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The card is jam-packed with title bouts, brimming with competitors who have personal hatred for one another.

The Miz will put his Intercontinental title on the line against Cesaro, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Natalya will get her rematch for the women’s title against Charlotte. The main event features the second bout between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles, vying for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

These WWE Superstars are ready to take their aggression out on each other. However, nothing creates buzz more than controversy. With many personal feuds laden on the card, expect a few matches to ruffle some feathers in the WWE Universe.

Let’s examine and break down WWE Extreme Rules’ matches that will leave fans talking, much to their chagrin. Granted, not every bout has been set yet. Therefore, let us take a look at which currently scheduled bouts are sure to cause controversy among fans.

WWE Tag Team Championships: The New Day vs. The Vaudevillians

The New Day will defend the tag titles against The Vaudevillians, a formidable team who won the NXT tag titles last summer.

It also appears the tag team division is getting overcrowded. The Dudley Boyz are still angry over the antics of The New Day and Enzo Amore and Big Cass. Speaking of Big Cass, he has some unfinished business with The Vaudevillians. The No. 1 contenders took credit for putting Enzo on the injured list at WWE Payback.

With the division in turmoil, expect plenty of interference during this bout. Expect chaos to run amok with a controversial finish and possibly The New Day faltering over new blood.

WWE Women’s Championship: Charlotte vs. Natalya

Deja vu is in full force regarding Charlotte and Natalya’s most recent encounter at WWE Payback. Once again, Charlotte won by putting Natalya in the sharpshooter. Referee Charles Robinson rang the bell, but Natalya never tapped out.

Now, they’ll do battle in a submission match. Ric Flair is banned from ringside, preventing him from helping his baby girl, Charlotte. The defending women’s champion will have to fend off Natalya by herself.

Natalya, the challenger, is a formidable worker, but Charlotte, women’s champion, is there for more than just her father’s guidance and interference.

She is The Dirtiest Player in the Game’s daughter. Do you think Charlotte hasn’t learned a few tricks to keep her title? In this bout, Charlotte will most likely keep her belt by any means necessary. Natalya will come close, but underhanded tactics will keep that title in the Flair household.

WWE Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs. Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

The intercontinental title has never been more coveted in recent memory.

The Miz has three challengers who all hate his guts. Cesaro wants another shot due to Owens and Zayn causing a distraction at WWE Payback, allowing Miz to roll him up. Owens wants his title back, the one he never got a fair rematch for. Zayn is in this bout for both glory and vengeance, wanting to cost Owens his opportunity just like he did at this year’s Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.

Despite these competitors entering the fray, keep an eye out for Maryse, The Miz’s wife. Maryse has been lady luck since she helped Miz regain the intercontinental title. She’s proved to be useful at ringside.

Owens and Zayn will most likely cancel each other out. All Cesaro has to worry about is The Miz and Maryse. The odds are not in The Swiss Superman’s favor, though. A Miz victory would enrage the fans, especially if he uses underhanded tactics to win. And that’s exactly what the WWE Universe should expect when watching this Fatal 4-Way match.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles

Reigns and Styles will return to the ring in an Extreme Rules match for WWE’s richest prize. Reigns will seemingly have The Usos by his side. They’ll counteract The Club in Styles, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows.

During this match, there’ll be no disqualifications and no count-outs. Anything can happen, which is why both men will bring everything they have.

Reigns is currently the most polarizing figure on the active roster. Styles is a fan favorite, albeit under dubious circumstances. This bout could be similar to their first encounter, with appearances from their friends.

However, this bout should end slightly different. Perhaps one of Reigns’ family members may accidentally cost his cousin the title. Maybe The Club makes the mistake and hurts Styles’ chances at obtaining the WWE world title.

Either way, this bout will have fans talking at the water cooler the next morning. Reigns or Styles might walk out the victor, but they won’t do so cleanly.

WWE Extreme Rules is on May 22 in Newark, New Jersey. Many personal rivalries will come to a head with glory on the line. In other words, don’t expect the night to go smoothly for any of these WWE Superstars. Expect a battle to the finish for each contender as they strive for the ultimate title: champion.
