Favorite Must be Wary of Fairytale Finish

All eyes should be on Florida Derby winner Nyquist once the big race begins. The three-year-old unbeaten champion rates as the obvious favorite for the $2 million purse after seven wins in a row.

Nyquist has also caught the eye in training ahead of the big race, according to Daily Racing Form's Mike Welsch:

But first-timer Trojan Nation shouldn't be easily dismissed, not with the incentive of making history. To be precise, Trojan Nation can become the first Maiden to win this race since 1933, according to John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times.

But the fairytale angle doesn't stop there with this horse. There's also the comeback of jockey Aaron Gryder, returning to this derby after a 15-year exile, per Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier-Journal.

It's a potent combination that's sure to have the neutrals pulling for a Trojan win.

Post Position Doesn't Favor Nyquist

Having the prime post position may be considered an advantage for Gryder and Nation, especially since Nyquist drew the 13th slot. Gryder will likely be buoyed by the fact 12 winners have come from the No. 1 position, with only four from the 13th, per Mike Dempsey of Odds Shark.

But if you're looking for one more reason to lean toward Nyquist, Dempsey also noted how: "The betting favorite has won each of the last three editions of the race, Orb (5-1), California Chrome (5-2) and American Pharoah (5-2). The last time four consecutive favorites have won the race was 1972-75."

That last line may not make Nyquist trainer Doug O'Neill feel too upbeat, but he at least sounds happy enough with post position 13. O'Neill even indicated it suits his horse to be "towards the outside," according to the Toronto Sun's Richard Mauntah.

Despite O'Neill's confidence though, there are other prominent contenders in good spots. Notably, Suddenbreakingnews and Creator look good on second and third pole positions. The latter's win at the Arkansas Derby showcased some impressive speed, specifically a 96 on the Beyer Speed test.

Creator showed off some eye-catching speed in Arkansas.

Nyquist just doesn't have that kind of speed, according to Neil Greenberg of the Washington Post: "His best work comes during one-turn sprints, not two-turn routes."

But Nyquist has made a habit of winning races in a variety of different ways, even if he has to come from off the pace.

Best Outside Bets

If you're still in the hunt for outsiders worthy of a bet, Churchill Downs analyst Joe Kristufek told B/R's Stephen Nelson how Todd Pletcher-trained duo Destin and Outwork both offer excellent value:

Still, it's going to be tough to bet against the 3-1 favorite.

Predicted Winner: Nyquist

Expect the top horse on show to again find a way to win and kick-start a bid for the Triple Crown.
